Two internal influences, one external
The statement splits three influences by where they sit. a. Bodily rhythms (internal): natural biological cycles the body runs itself. b. Hormones (internal): the pineal gland releasing melatonin. c. Zeitgebers (external): cues that reset the clock — named one is light (German 'time giver'). The three are not rivals: the rhythm is generated internally and runs with no cues; light does not create it, it adjusts it via the hormone pathway.
Bodily rhythm: circadian vs ultradian
A bodily rhythm is a natural biological cycle repeating over a set period — natural is essential; omitting it has scored zero. Circadian: about 24 hours — the sleep-wake cycle, and the daily rise and fall in body temperature. Ultradian: less than 24 hours, more than once a day — the sleep cycle, through the stages and REM about every 90 minutes. Hook: ultra sounds big, but ultradian is the shorter one, fitting more into a day — the top trap.
The hormone chain: pineal gland and melatonin
A two-mark item needs both the gland and the hormone. The chain: eye detects light -> body clock (suprachiasmatic nucleus) -> pineal gland -> releases melatonin -> melatonin induces sleepiness and times the sleep-wake cycle. Both directions: in darkness more melatonin, sleepiness rises; in bright light melatonin is suppressed, alertness holds. Pineal gland = releases melatonin in response to light; melatonin = a hormone, not a drug.
Strengths AND weaknesses of each explanation
'Strengths and weaknesses of each explanation' — one-sided cannot top-band. Bodily rhythms: strength the rhythm persists when all cues are removed (Siffre), so it is internal; weakness few cave cases. Hormones: strength a clear, measurable mechanism; weakness reductionist — ignores worry, noise, caffeine, pain. Zeitgebers: strength advice that works; weakness light is not the only cue. Judgement: the three work together, not as rivals.

Ultradian defined as more than 24 hours
The most reported error: asked to define an ultradian rhythm, candidates write over 24 hours or weekly/monthly. It is less than 24 hours — the ~90-minute sleep cycle. Ultra misleads: each cycle is short, so more fit into a day. Giving only an example ('the sleep cycle') is not a definition. Check: does it happen more than once a day? If so, ultradian.

Dropping "natural" from the definition
A bodily-rhythm definition that omits natural has scored zero — as have rewording the question ('a rhythm the body has') and giving only an example ('the sleep-wake cycle'). Full answer: a natural biological cycle that repeats over a set period. Natural separates a rhythm from a habit: eating at six repeats but is imposed, not generated by the body.

Pineal gland or melatonin, but not both
A two-mark item on the hormone route needs both elements. 'The pineal gland controls sleep' names a gland but no mechanism; 'melatonin makes you sleepy' names a hormone but not its source — each is one mark at most. Two-mark answer: the pineal gland responds to light by releasing melatonin, and melatonin induces sleepiness and times the sleep-wake cycle.

The brain is not "tricked" by light
Examiners record answers that bright lights trick the brain into thinking it is daytime. That describes a belief, not a biological process, so it earns no credit. Replace it: bright light at the eye suppresses melatonin release from the pineal gland, so sleepiness does not build at the usual time. Skipping the melatonin step misses what is assessed.

Benefit of sleep, not disadvantage of loss
A recurring trap that also appears on this option. Asked for a benefit of sleep, do not write what goes wrong without it (tired, cannot concentrate). Those are disadvantages of sleep deprivation. A benefit describes the sleeper's gain — restored energy, growth and repair, memory consolidation. Read which way the question points before writing.

Describe: two unique points and a connective
A two-mark 'describe' needs two unique points; the same reworded scores one. On describe the difference (circadian vs ultradian), two definitions side by side count as an implicit difference worth one — a connective (whereas) earns the second. Keep halves comparable: a length against a length ('24 hours whereas less than 24 hours'), not a length against an example.

Light does not cause the rhythm
Many think the clock is driven from outside — light in, melatonin out, sleep. The reverse is true: the rhythm is generated internally and keeps running with all cues removed, the key point. Light is a zeitgeber that resets the cycle, not creates it; remove light and it drifts past 24 hours, not stops. Melatonin is no sleeping drug: it only induces sleepiness.
Light is the route in; the detail earns AO2
Light is the most dependable route in. Tie a detail — light exposure, sleep times, a recent change — to a named step: 'the light stays on till midnight, so less melatonin is released and sleep is delayed.' The name or stem is not application, and AO3 needs AO2.
Using Siffre as evidence
Siffre spent six months in a cave with no light cues. His sleep-wake cycle lengthened and varied (up to ~48 hours). Marks are lost when results are wrong (capped at one) or right but unlinked to the scenario (zero). AO3 is 'Siffre is one person' — develop it beyond that.
The 9-mark Assess: balance and a conclusion
The Assess is AO1 3 / AO2 3 / AO3 3, and the weakness is the last three marks. Give a strength and a weakness per explanation used, then a conclusion — the influences usually work together. Put AO2 before AO3; write continuous prose, not bullets.
The statement names three influences, and the first thing to fix is which side of the body each one sits on.
