Perception is indirect: the brain builds it
Constructivist means perception is built by the brain, not received. The input is incomplete, so the brain goes beyond the information given — perception is indirect. The four spec bullets form one chain: sensory input, perceptual hypothesis (an active best guess), inference (filling the gaps the eye never gave) and prior knowledge (the stored memories the guess uses). Prior knowledge feeds the hypothesis, not last in time.
Each bullet has a precise definition
The mark scheme wants precise wording. Sensory input is the raw pattern of light on the retina — incomplete and ambiguous, not 'what you see'. Perceptual hypothesis is an active best guess tested against the input and revised if it does not fit. Inference is filling in the gaps. Prior knowledge is stored memories, experience and culture. Two habits win AO1 marks: call the input incomplete, and say the hypothesis is tested.
Learn balanced strengths and weaknesses
'Strengths and weaknesses' is in the statement, so an unbalanced answer misses the top band. Strengths: it explains ambiguous figures and illusions (a fixed image is seen two ways only via a tested hypothesis), and recognition in fog or a glimpse. Weaknesses: everyday perception is fast and accurate, so guessing should cause more error than occurs; and Gibson's Direct Theory rivals it. Judgement: strong on degraded viewing, weaker where Gibson fits.

Answering Gregory with Gibson's ideas
The biggest mark-loser here. Asked about Gregory, candidates write about optic flow, invariants and affordances — all Gibson's Direct Theory (8.1.2). Self-check: if your word is optic flow, invariant or affordance you are on the wrong theory; hypothesis, inference and prior knowledge are the right ones. Mixing the two earns credit under neither.

"Supports Gregory" is not a justification
Candidates give evidence, then add this supports Gregory's theory — asserting the conclusion without saying how, which scores nothing. A justified point has three parts: the evidence, the mechanism (which named part of the theory it shows), and the consequence for the theory. Once the mechanism is spelled out, no 'this supports' line is needed.
Examiners state that saying an answer "supports Gregory's theory" is not an AO3 justification and the mechanism must be stated separately (June 2023 P2 Q24).
Hypothesis, inference, prior knowledge mixed
Answers swap these three terms; the mark scheme credits each distinct job. The perceptual hypothesis is the best guess itself, formed then tested. Inference is filling in the missing detail. A second trap is the word 'hypothesis': in research methods it is a testable prediction; here it is a rapid, unconscious guess made in an instant.

Sensation vs perception
Sensation and perception are not the same. Sensation is the detection of a stimulus by a sense organ. Perception is the interpretation of what was detected — the finished experience. Sensory input belongs to sensation; the hypothesis, inference and prior knowledge belong to perception. 'The eye sees the object' skips the construction the theory explains.
Describe the difference needs a connective
'Describe the difference' is not two definitions side by side — that leaves the difference implied and scores one mark. The second mark comes from a connective (whereas, in contrast) naming what they differ on. Gregory says the input is incomplete so the brain infers from prior knowledge, whereas Gibson says the light already specifies the world.

Naming a point is not evaluating it
On a strength or weakness item, naming the feature is only the first step — examiners flag this every series. 'A weakness is that the evidence is artificial' is a label. The version that scores adds why and so what: illusion studies use flat drawings shown briefly, which means the evidence may not describe normal viewing. Use point, why, consequence.

Constructivism doesn't mean we imagine things
Students hear 'the brain constructs perception' and wrongly conclude we imagine the world. In fact the hypothesis is constrained by the sensory input — the brain makes the best guess consistent with what the eye supplies. So the guess is usually right. The real weakness is the opposite: if perception were guessing, we would expect more error than occurs.
Application uses conditions, not the name
These questions set someone misperceiving, and that detail is the only source of AO2 marks — and AO3 needs AO2 first. Naming the person or repeating the stem is not application: tie a scenario fact to a named part of the theory, e.g. fading light means degraded input.
Structure the 9-mark Assess for 7-9
The 9-mark Assess is AO1 3 / AO2 3 / AO3 3, and the 7-9 band is lost to weak AO3 and balance. Four paragraphs: AO1 the four bullets; AO2 scenario facts tied to named parts; AO3 a support and a limitation with mechanisms; then a judged conclusion. Continuous prose, not bullets.
Match the command word
Answer what the command word asks. State wants the term alone. Describe (2 marks) needs two unique points — rewording it scores one, so pair 'a best guess' with 'tested and revised'. Explain wants the term plus why. Assess wants knowledge, application and judgement.
Spell out the mechanism in AO3
Every AO3 point here lives on the mechanism — 'this supports Gregory' is an assertion, not a justification. Name which part it shows or contradicts, and why. Useful lenses are validity, objectivity and generalisability. End each with a consequence.
Sensation — the detection of a stimulus by a sense organ. Perception — the interpretation of what has been detected. Gregory's theory is about how the second is built from the first.
Sensory input — the raw information reaching the eye: a flat, often brief, partly hidden and ambiguous pattern of light. Gregory's starting claim is that this input is not enough on its own.
