Aim: what each half can do alone
The corpus callosum joins the two hemispheres and carries information between them — a bridge, not a region with a job of its own. A commissurotomy cuts it to treat severe epilepsy, so the halves can no longer share information. Sperry's aim was to investigate the effects of this deconnection: whether each separated hemisphere has its own perception, learning and memory. He did not do the surgery, and this is disconnection, not the brain damage of 4.2.1.
Procedure: flash to one field, 11 patients
Learn it as steps; the patient count is most often left out. (1) 11 patients whose corpus callosum was cut for severe epilepsy, vs people who had not. (2) One eye covered, gaze on a central dot. (3) A word or picture flashed to its left or right for about a tenth of a second, too fast to move the eyes, so it reaches one hemisphere. (4) The patient says, writes or draws it, or finds the match by touch. Nobody chose the surgery, so this is a natural experiment.
Findings: left speaks, right shows by hand
Split findings into results (observed) and conclusions (meaning); a 2-mark item wants two results. Results: a right-field stimulus (left hemisphere) could be named; the same in the left field (right hemisphere) could not — yet the left hand found the object by touch. Conclusions: the right hemisphere perceived it but cannot speak (language output, not awareness); each half has its own perception and memory; function is lateralised (language left, spatial right).

Vague recall, and forgetting it was 11
This study is hard to recall accurately. Four hooks earn credit: 11 patients whose corpus callosum was cut for severe epilepsy; a central dot, one eye covered; a tenth-of-a-second exposure; and being asked to say, write or draw it, or find it by touch. A vague "the two sides differed" states no procedure. The count is worth a mark on its own — learn it as 11.
Candidates found it difficult to recall Sperry (1968) accurately and accurate recall was uncommon (June 2023 P1 Q18); only a minority stated the number of patients (Nov 2021 P1 Q16a).
Everything crosses over
The most muddled rule. The left visual field goes to the right hemisphere; the right field to the left hemisphere; each hand obeys the opposite hemisphere. So the left hand is the right hemisphere's hand — why it finds an object the patient swears they never saw. Everything crosses: send the left field to the left hemisphere and the answer is wrong.

Corpus callosum is a bridge, not a region
Zero-scoring candidates wrote about the corpus callosum as though it were another region of the brain with its own function. It is not: it has no job of its own the way the occipital lobe has vision. It is the bundle of nerve fibres joining the two hemispheres so information can pass — cut in Sperry's patients. Treat it as a connection, never a region.
Zero-scoring candidates tended to think the corpus callosum was another part of the brain (Nov 2020 P1 Q15b).
A result is not a conclusion
A result is what was observed; a conclusion is what Sperry inferred. "Could not name a left-field picture" is a result; "the right hemisphere has no speech" is the conclusion. "The left hand found the object by touch" is a result; "the right hemisphere perceived it, so the failure was in speech not sight" is the conclusion. Give the meaning, not the observation.
A result offered where a conclusion was asked for is a recurring zero (June 2023 P2 Q1f; June 2024 P1 Q5a and Q11a).
Naming a weakness is only half the mark
"A weakness is only 11 patients" identifies but does not justify. Every strength or weakness needs point, why, consequence. Point: the sample is small and unusual. Why: all 11 had severe epilepsy and brain surgery. Consequence: the pattern may describe the disconnected surgical brain, not how an intact brain divides its work — limiting generalisability.
Identification without justification is named on strength and weakness items (June 2024 P1 Q11b and Q15b), and a strength and weakness item on lateralisation produced purely generic answers (June 2019 P1 Q17).
Difference questions need a connective
Asked for the difference between the two hemispheres, candidates write two definitions side by side, leaving the difference only implied — one mark of two. Use a connective (whereas, while) naming what they differ on: the left hemisphere has speech, whereas the right can show what it saw only through the left hand. A 2-mark describe also needs two unique points.
The difference question needs connectives to earn the second mark (June 2023 P1 Q15); a 2-mark describe needs two unique points (June 2023 P2 Q22).
The right hemisphere is blind and useless
"The right hemisphere cannot see and is useless" — wrong. It saw it: the patient reports nothing, yet the left hand finds the object by touch, impossible unless it saw it; what it lacks is speech, not perception. Nor is it the weaker half — on spatial tasks the left hand beat the right. Everyday behaviour looked normal: odd effects appear only under the tight test.
Recall of this study is inaccurate and uncommon (June 2023 P1 Q18) and the hemispheres are muddled up (June 2019 P1 Q16).
Reach the 7-9 band: AO1, AO2, then AO3
The 9-mark Assess is AO1 3 / AO2 3 / AO3 3, and the top band is lost for lack of AO3. Give AO1 (aim, 11 patients, procedure, findings), then AO2 (match the scenario's own detail), then AO3 (a supporting and a limiting point, each with a consequence) and a conclusion.
Application means the scenario's own detail
AO2 comes only from the scenario's own detail, and AO3 cannot be awarded without AO2. Not application: the person's name, the repeated stem, or a copied line. What counts: quote the detail and say why — a left hand acting on a thing it cannot name is right-hemisphere evidence.
Read the command word before you answer
Match what you write to the verb. "State the number" wants 11, nothing else. "Describe" wants distinct steps. "Give a finding" wants a result; "give a conclusion" wants what Sperry inferred. "Explain a strength" wants it justified and applied. Read the verb first.
The specification asks for four things about this named study: its aim, its procedure, its findings (results and conclusions) and its strengths and weaknesses. Learn them as four blocks, because that is how the questions are set.
