Nature vs nurture, and what the debate asks
Nature: behaviour explained by inherited biology a person is born with — genes and biochemistry. Nurture: behaviour explained by environment, experience and learning — upbringing, family and role models. Bullets a and b are examined as two separate definitions, give each in mark-scheme form. The debate is not a choice: it asks how much each side contributes and how they interact — best seen as interactionist, an inherited vulnerability plus an environmental trigger.
The nature side, built from Topic 3
Bullet c uses Topic 3 content to explain the debate. Genes (3.1.4): an inherited predisposition is passed on, not the disorder. Evidence: both run in families; identical twins share a diagnosis more often than non-identical; adoption studies separate genes from environment. Caspi et al. (2003), 3.2.1: depression was likeliest with the short 5-HTT gene AND stressful life events. Drugs (3.1.8): SSRIs raise synapse serotonin, but a treatment working does not prove the cause.
The nurture side, built from Topic 3
The nurture half of bullet c. Addiction, learning theory (3.1.6): operant conditioning positively reinforces the reward and negatively reinforces escape; SLT has a role model observed and imitated. Depression, cognitive theory (3.1.5): Beck's negative triad and Ellis's ABC model — thinking habits built from experience. CBT and Young (2007) (3.1.7, 3.2.2): relearning to think helps. Changing incidence (3.1.2): a gene pool cannot change within decades, so part is environmental.

Swapping nature and nurture between parts
The documented failure: candidates define both terms well, then attach them to the wrong part — a stressful home life where nature was asked, family history where nurture was asked. Good psychology scores zero, because each answers the other part. Fix: underline the word in the stem, then apply the born-with test — present at birth is nature, learnt since is nurture.
Candidates define nature and nurture competently via genes and social learning theory (Nov 2021 P1 Q13), but SWAP the terms between the two parts (June 2019 P1 Q11a, Q11b) and answer on nature when nurture was asked (June 2024 P1 Q13).
Nature-nurture is not reductionism-holism
Candidates blur 1PS0's debates. Nature-nurture asks where behaviour comes from — inherited biology or environment. Reductionism-holism asks at what level to explain it — simplest parts or the whole person. They overlap but come apart: nurture can be reductionist, nature can be holistic. If a question says nature or nurture, answer about the source, not the level.
Reductionism was misunderstood when candidates applied it to a genetic explanation of depression (Nov 2020 P1 Q11b).
Vague "genes" instead of Caspi’s detail
When a question names a study the marks are in its detail, and Caspi et al. is poorly known: candidates write it showed depression is genetic, or muddle its sample and findings. Crediting detail: depression was likeliest with the short 5-HTT gene AND stressful life events; the short version alone did not predict it. Drop either half and the finding is wrong.
The crediting detail on Caspi et al. is the short version of the gene combined with stressful life events (June 2022 P1 Q15); candidates described a different study's sample and managed one of two findings (June 2024 P1 Q12a, Q12b).
Inheriting a disorder vs a vulnerability
The evidence does not say a person inherits depression or addiction itself — they inherit a raised vulnerability, a predisposition that may never become a diagnosis. Writing she inherited depression from her mother overstates the claim. Say vulnerability, not the disorder — this is why the short gene predicted depression only alongside stressful events.
Difference answered as two definitions
Asked to describe the difference between nature and nurture, candidates write one definition of each and stop. The contrast is only implied, credited with one mark. The second needs a connective — whereas, while, however — to name the axis the two differ on. Two true definitions are not a difference until that connective makes it explicit.
Describe-the-difference items are answered as two separate definitions with no connective, where a word such as whereas earns the second mark (June 2019 P1 Q6; June 2022 P1 Q7).
Debate is a choice; nature means fixed
Two distortions. Pick a side: the debate is about relative contribution, not one cause — identical twins share all their genes yet only one may be diagnosed, and Caspi et al. found the short gene and stressful events matter together. Nature means nothing helps: cause and cure differ — CBT (Young, 2007) helped addicts, and a nurture-based problem can respond to an SSRI.
Family history or a drug do not prove cause
Two nature-evidence traps. It runs in the family, so it is genetic: families share a home, stress and the adults' example, so a family pattern is consistent with genes without proving them (a validity limit). The SSRI helped, so the cause was chemical: a treatment shows what eases a problem, not what started it. Use each as AO3 — claim, limitation, consequence.
Reaching the 7-9 band on the 9-mark Assess
The Assess splits AO1 3 / AO2 3 / AO3 3; the yearly gap is AO3 and balance. AO1 defines both terms; AO2 sorts the scenario's own details onto each side; AO3 gives one supported point per side then a conclusion — an interaction. Write AO2 before AO3.
Apply the scenario; explain, don’t just name
Application (AO2) means the scenario's own details — not the name, the stem, or a copied line. Frame: this detail points to nature or nurture because of what it shows about the source. And explain is not name: an evaluation needs the point, why it follows and the consequence.
The born-with test sorts scenario details
Before writing AO2, sort each scenario detail: was it present at birth? Genes, brain chemistry and inherited vulnerability pass — nature. A gambling parent, a bereavement or a learnt habit of thought fail — nurture. Sorting first stops a detail landing on the wrong side.
