Genes pass on vulnerability, not the disorder
A gene is a section of DNA carrying instructions for a characteristic, inherited from biological parents. The genetic explanation says a problem is influenced by the gene versions inherited — passing on a vulnerability (a raised likelihood), not the problem itself. Evidence: family studies, twin studies (identical share all genes, non-identical half) and adoption studies. Write "vulnerability"; "the gene gives you depression" over-claims.
Depression: short 5-HTT plus life stress
Serotonin regulates mood. The serotonin transporter gene (5-HTT) clears serotonin from the synapse, in a short and a long version. Inheriting the short version regulates mood less efficiently, raising vulnerability.
The crediting detail is the combination: the short version plus stressful life events made depression most likely — the finding of Caspi et al. (2003). Naming the gene without the stress half gives only half the explanation.
Addiction: a reward system harder to satisfy
Dopamine carries the reward signal via receptors. The genetic explanation says some inherit a dopamine receptor gene version with fewer receptors in the reward pathway.
So everyday rewards give a weaker signal, and the person seeks something that floods the system with dopamine (a drug, gambling) to get that feeling. Repetition establishes the addiction.
What is inherited is a reward system harder to satisfy, not an addiction to one substance.

Reductionism: name what reduces to what
Reductionism is the standard AO3 criticism, most often thrown away — explaining behaviour by its simplest parts, here reducing depression to the version of one gene. Three moves: name it; say what reduces to what; say why it matters (it omits life events and thinking style, so cannot explain why one person with the gene is depressed and another not).
Reductionism was misunderstood when applied to a genetic explanation of depression (Nov 2020 P1 Q11b).
Genes are always the nature side
The definition trap here costs part-marks. Nature = inherited, biological (genes, temperament). Nurture = environment and learning (life events, upbringing). The recorded failure is mechanical: the two parts answered the wrong way round, or nurture answered on nature. Stressful life events are nurture, even beside the gene — gene = nature, events = nurture.

Explain the strength, don't name it
Evaluation is examinable content here; the failure is identification without justification. Label: "a strength is scientific evidence." Explained: "it rests on objective evidence — twin studies count cases, which no researcher reinterprets, so figures reproduce." Force it with "and this matters because…" — unfinished, it is no point.

A relationship is not a cause
Carrying a gene version alongside a higher rate of a problem shows the two go together — a relationship. It does not show the gene produced the problem; another factor could raise both. This is a genuine AO3 point: twin, family and adoption studies show a problem runs with shared genes, but running-together is correlation, not cause.
A difference needs a connective
Asked for the difference between nature and nurture, two definitions side by side leave it implied — worth one mark. A connective names the axis: "nature explains behaviour by inherited factors such as genes, whereas nurture explains it by environment such as life events." "Whereas", "while" or "in contrast" earns the second mark.
"Describe the difference" answered as two separate definitions is recorded at June 2019 P1 Q6 and June 2022 P1 Q7; connectives such as "whereas" earn the second mark.
Twin concordance isn't pure genetics
A higher rate in identical than non-identical pairs is the headline twin evidence — but it is not pure genetics. Identical twins are usually treated more alike, so their environments are more similar as well as their genes. Part of the higher concordance may come from shared upbringing, so the design confuses genes with environment — a strong AO3 weakness.
Myth: the gene guarantees the disorder
Two linked errors. "Inherit the gene → you get it": no — identical twins share all their genes, yet discordant pairs exist, so a gene alone cannot decide it. What is inherited is a raised likelihood. "If genetic, therapy is pointless": no — a vulnerability is still acted on through environment and behaviour, so deterministic is a criticism, not a fact.
Reductionism and the nature-nurture distinction are both misapplied to the genetic explanation of depression (Nov 2020 P1 Q11b; June 2019 P1 Q11a/b).
Use the scenario detail, not the name
On a scenario, AO3 cannot score without AO2 — a generic evaluation earns nothing. Not application: the name, the stem, a copied line. Application: "her mother and sister were both treated, so close relatives sharing genes could share the vulnerability."
9-mark Assess: balance and conclude
The 9-mark Assess is AO1 3 / AO2 3 / AO3 3; the 7-9 band needs AO3 and balance. Define the mechanism (AO1), tie two details to it (AO2), weigh strengths and weaknesses (reductionist, deterministic, discordant twins), then conclude in prose.
Write AO2 before AO3
Write the AO1 knowledge, tie one concrete scenario detail to it (AO2), then evaluate. Leading with the evaluation leaves the application thin, and since AO3 cannot score without AO2 that forfeits both. AO3-first is allowed and scores, but it is riskier.
Name the mechanism, not just "genes"
A precise answer names the mechanism, not just "genes". Depression: the short 5-HTT gene, vulnerable with stressful life events. Addiction: an inherited dopamine receptor version with fewer receptors, so rewards feel weaker. Naming it makes AO1 creditworthy.
