Three separate stores in a fixed order
The multi-store model (Atkinson and Shiffrin, 1968) explains memory as three separate stores — sensory register, short-term and long-term memory — that information passes through in a fixed order, each with its own capacity and duration. Movement is not automatic: attention moves material into STM, rehearsal moves it into LTM. Anything not attended to or rehearsed is lost. It explains memory by structure, not meaning.
Bullets a-e: capacity and duration per store
Learn capacity (how much) and duration (how long) as a pair for each store, in the spec''s figures. Sensory register: very large; under ~2 seconds; entered automatically. Short-term memory: about 7 plus or minus 2 items; about 18-30 seconds without rehearsal. Long-term memory: potentially unlimited; up to a lifetime. Write "about", and say which feature you mean — "STM is small" earns neither mark.

Bullets f and g sit on different arrows. Attention (f) moves information out of the sensory register into STM — everything reaches the register automatically, but only what is attended to passes on; the rest decays. Rehearsal (g) has two jobs: maintenance keeps material in STM past ~18-30 seconds, and transfer moves it into LTM. Retrieval then brings material back from LTM to STM, so forgetting is failure to attend, rehearse or retrieve.

Capacity vs duration, tied to the scenario
Capacity is how much a store holds; duration is how long. Candidates define one and label it the other, or give a general definition without tying it to the scenario. Say which feature you mean — "STM is small" earns nothing — and where a situation is given, attach it: "the digits were gone before she reached the keypad".
Duration and capacity must be defined in relation to the scenario (Nov 2021 P1 Q7a and Q7b, a small COVID-era cohort).
Attention does not enter the sensory register
The named error here: candidates say attention is needed to enter the sensory register, or that rehearsal puts information there — both reverse the model. The sensory register is the first store, entered automatically by everything the senses pick up. Attention is the arrow out of it (into STM); rehearsal is one arrow further (STM to LTM).

Describing the model is not applying it
Candidates often draw the three stores accurately but never touch the scenario — that is AO1 only, and since AO3 needs AO2 an unapplied answer can lose the evaluation marks too. Not application: the character''s name, repeating the stem, copying a line. Application reads a specific detail through the model, e.g. the six-digit code held just long enough to type.
Purely generic responses on application questions cannot be credited (June 2019 P1 Summary), and the character's name alone is not application (June 2022 P1 Q4b).
Naming a point without justifying it
"A weakness is that it is too simple" names a point and stops. A creditworthy evaluation has three parts: the point, why it follows from the model, and the consequence. E.g. free-recall studies find the first and last list items recalled best, which fits separate stores, so the model makes a testable prediction. Identifying is only the first part.

Saying the word back is not a definition
A tautology repeats the term instead of defining it — "retrieval is when you retrieve something", or "capacity is how much capacity a store has". It earns nothing: no mechanism is shown. Every definition must carry the mechanism — for example, retrieval brings material back from LTM into STM so it can be used, and capacity is the number of items a store can hold at once.

Two definitions are not a difference
"Describe the difference" and "compare" set the ideas against each other, not two definitions side by side, which leaves the contrast implicit — one mark at most. A connective (whereas) earns the second mark: the multi-store model uses fixed stores linked by attention and rehearsal, whereas reconstructive memory rebuilds fragments through schemas.

Rehearsal has two jobs, not just transfer
Two distortions. Rehearsal has two jobs: maintenance (keeping material in STM past ~18-30s) and transfer into LTM — dropping the first loses a mark. "Rehearse it and you''ll remember it" is the model''s weak point: we recall unrehearsed shocking moments yet forget repeated material, so meaning and emotion affect transfer, which it explains by repetition alone.
MSM vs reconstructive; evidence is not proof
Two errors. The MSM is not reconstructive memory: it is a structure of stores linked by attention and rehearsal, whereas reconstructive memory rebuilds fragments through schemas (Bartlett). "There is evidence, so it must be right": the lab studies give good control and reliability but used word lists, so their ecological validity is limited.

Reaching the 7-9 band on the 9-mark Assess
The 9-mark Assess splits AO1 3 / AO2 3 / AO3 3, and the yearly weakness is AO3 and balance. Name the stores and the capacity/duration needed, apply the scenario''s own details, then give a supported strength and weakness, and a conclusion that follows.
Match the command word
Define: the mechanism, not the word repeated. Describe (2): two unique points. Explain (2): a point plus its scenario link. Explain a strength/weakness (4): justify and apply each point. Assess (9): knowledge, application, balanced evaluation, conclusion.
Write AO2 before AO3, in prose
Writing order is free, but starting with AO3 leaves the AO2 too thin to credit, and since AO3 needs AO2 that forfeits the marks. Apply the model first, then evaluate. Write in continuous prose: bullet-pointed essays are not accepted.
Name the evidence precisely
Evaluation needs precise evidence. Peterson and Peterson studied STM duration with nonsense trigrams — quote the figures. The 7 plus-or-minus-2 capacity is a different researcher''s finding, so pinning the wrong finding to the wrong name loses the mark.
