Alternative hypothesis predicts a difference
An alternative hypothesis (H1) predicts there will be a difference between conditions, or a relationship between variables. Its opposite, the null hypothesis (H0), predicts no difference or relationship; the two are a pair and the study decides between them. It is not an aim: an aim states the purpose (to investigate whether music affects memory), while the hypothesis predicts an outcome about the variables, not the people.
Operationalise both the IV and the DV
To operationalise a variable is to state it in the exact form used in the study — the IV's specific conditions and the DV's specific measurement. Naming only the topic cannot be tested. Not operationalised: music affects memory. Operationalised: people who revise with music recall fewer words out of twenty than those in silence. The habit: write the IV as whether … or … and the DV as the number of …, then fold both into one prediction.
Directional or non-directional
Having predicted a difference, decide whether to predict which way it goes. Non-directional (two-tailed) predicts only that there is a difference. Directional (one-tailed) predicts which way, using a comparative — more, less, fewer, higher, lower. Choose directional when research points one way, non-directional when evidence is mixed or absent. A correlation follows the same rule: a positive correlation is directional, a correlation is non-directional.

Vague hypothesis that names no conditions
The commonest failure is the aim in disguise — music affects memory. It names the topic, not the testable variables, so nothing can be measured. A hypothesis is usable only when both variables are operationalised: name both conditions of the IV (not music but with music versus in silence) and the exact DV (not memory but words recalled out of twenty).
The demand to state a variable in full with both of its conditions, rather than as a bare topic, is recorded in November 2021 Paper 2 Q05a, where "telephone numbers" alone was not enough.
Directional and non-directional mixed up
Asked for a directional hypothesis, candidates write there will be a difference — which gives no direction and is non-directional. Asked for a non-directional one, they slip in a comparative such as more and make it directional. Test: is there a comparative — more, less, fewer, higher, lower? If yes it is directional; if no, non-directional.
Choosing a direction with no evidence
A directional hypothesis is appropriate only when previous research or theory points one way. Choosing it where the evidence is mixed, or where the question gives no prior research, is a guess dressed up as a prediction. With no basis to commit, a non-directional hypothesis is safer because it does not claim to know the direction. Read the stem for prior research first.
Writing the null when asked for H1
Because the null and the alternative are taught together, candidates asked for the alternative sometimes write there will be no difference — which is the null. The alternative always predicts there will be a difference or relationship; the null predicts there will not. Slipping a no into an alternative turns it into its opposite and loses the mark.
Writing the aim instead of a prediction
An aim states a study's purpose — to investigate whether music affects memory — while a hypothesis predicts a specific outcome. Candidates often hand back the aim, reworded, as their hypothesis; it reads as a plan, not a prediction, so nothing can be tested. Turn the purpose into a concrete prediction, naming both IV conditions and the exact DV.
Copying the question stem
A hypothesis that simply re-states the stem — this study will show whether music affects memory — adds nothing testable and reads as the aim again. Repeating the question is not creditworthy. Convert the topic into a concrete prediction: name both IV conditions, name the DV measurement, and predict a difference, committing to a direction only if it can be justified.

Non-directional is still a valid H1
Students often think a proper hypothesis must say which way the results go, and that predicting only a difference is incomplete. It is not: a non-directional hypothesis is a fully valid alternative, predicting that a difference exists, without a direction. The word alternative means the alternative to the null, not a back-up.
A hypothesis is tested, not proved
Two errors weaken answers. First, treating the hypothesis as the result: it is written before data are collected — the prediction, not the finding. Second, saying a study proves a hypothesis: GCSE psychology avoids proof, so a study gives evidence for one prediction over the other. Write that results support it, never prove it.
Match the command word
Do what the command word asks. Write a hypothesis wants the prediction with both variables operationalised. Directional or non-directional? wants the label plus the comparative that proves it. Null or alternative? wants difference versus no difference.
Build it in a fixed order
Build a hypothesis in order: write both IV conditions as whether … or …; write the exact DV (the number, score or time); decide directional or non-directional; then fold into one sentence. Marks are for the operationalised variables, not the character's name.
Describe the difference: use a connective
When asked to describe the difference (null vs alternative, or directional vs non-directional), give one comparative sentence, not two definitions side by side. Two definitions score half; a connective such as whereas earns the second mark.
Alternative hypothesis (H1) — a testable statement predicting that there will be a difference between conditions, or a relationship between two variables.

Operationalise — to state a variable in the exact form it takes in the study: the specific conditions of the IV and the specific measurement of the DV.
Directional (one-tailed) — predicts which way the difference will go.
