Why we have NVC, not what it is
10.1.4 asks for the examples of non-verbal communication (NVC); 10.1.5 asks where they come from. NVC is communicating a message without words — facial expressions, eye contact, posture, gestures. Darwin's (1872) theory says NVC is inherited, not learned: useful expressions that helped ancestors survive were passed on by natural selection, so they are adaptive. Say inherited or innate; describing NVC is not explaining it.
Two examples, two different adaptive routes
A 'two ways' question needs two examples that work differently. Bared teeth (lips pulled back at a threat) warns a rival off, so a fight is avoided. Muscle tension (jaw, shoulders and brow tightening automatically) prepares the body for fight readiness, so a response comes faster if the danger is real. They are two different ways because the first changes another's behaviour, the second your own state. Both ending 'it helps you survive' is one justification, credited once.
Nature and nurture evidence for NVC
This is the nature-nurture debate applied to NVC. FOR inheritance: the same expressions appear worldwide (universality); infants born blind still smile without seeing one; threatened animals bare their teeth too (animals DO use NVC). AGAINST: Yuki et al. (2007): Western people weight the mouth, Eastern the eyes; personal space, gestures and display rules are learned. Verdict: an inherited core modified by learning — production looks innate, display and reading cultural.

Giving "survival" twice is one way, not two
Asked for two ways NVC is adaptive, a candidate writes that two different expressions each 'increase survival'. Both are right, but increasing survival IS the definition of adaptive — the conclusion of every point, not a point itself. What differs is the ROUTE: one signal alters another's behaviour, the other prepares your own body. Change the route, not the example.

Describing NVC instead of explaining it
Asked to explain NVC using Darwin, candidates write 'NVC is communicating without words, e.g. facial expressions and gestures' — an accurate 10.1.4 answer that explains nothing, so on 10.1.5 it scores zero. Test before writing: does your sentence say inherited, innate or passed on? If not, you have described the behaviour, not explained its origin.

Generic scenario answer, unjustified strength
Scenario answers score zero if generic. 'This shows Darwin because NVC is inherited' uses nothing from the scenario, so AO2 is lost — and AO3 needs AO2. Not application: the name, repeating the stem, copying the scenario across. Application: run the scenario's own detail through the mechanism — narrowed eyes and squared shoulders are muscle tension for fight readiness.
Generic answers score zero on the Darwin content (June 2023 P2 Q39); purely generic responses cannot be credited on application items (June 2019 P1 Summary); the character's name is not application (June 2022 P1 Q4b; June 2023 P2 Q25); repeating the stem is not application (June 2024 P2 Summary and Q10); lifting the scenario is not using it (June 2023 P2 Q16; June 2024 P2 Introduction); AO3 cannot be awarded without AO2 (June 2023 P2 Q31).
Loose definitions of the NVC terms
The explanation must sit on a correctly defined behaviour. Recorded slips: personal space is the distance a person feels comfortable at, not 'wanting to be alone'; eye contact must be named as NVC and tied to an emotion, so 'staring' fails; gestures are physical movement, confused with facial expression; proxemics is distance appropriate to a relationship.

Result restated where a conclusion is asked
A result is what was observed; a conclusion is what it means for the theory. Asked for a conclusion, candidates restate a figure, which scores nothing. '75% of an isolated group matched the fear face' is a result; the conclusion is that people who could not have copied it still produce it, as an inherited account predicts.

Weakness given where improvement is asked
An improvement asks what to do DIFFERENTLY next time; candidates give a weakness — what is wrong — instead. 'The sample was one country only' is a weakness; the improvement is the fix: test people from several communities with no contact with one another, so a shared expression cannot be put down to shared media. State the change, and ideally the problem it solves.

Animals lack NVC; inherited means deliberate
'Only humans use NVC': animals plainly communicate without words — a dog bares its teeth — so a shared display is EVIDENCE for a common origin, not against it (the human-animal contrast is 10.1.3: language, displacement). 'Adaptive means deliberate': nobody decides to tense their jaw; the benefit explains why the behaviour spread, not why anyone performs it.

No single fact settles nature vs nurture
'Yuki (2007) disproves Darwin': it shows a difference in how a face is READ (Western weight the mouth, Eastern the eyes), not that expressions are learned — production looks inherited, attention is cultural. 'Universality proves it': shared media could spread expressions, so it shows a behaviour is shared, not why it is shared.
Yuki et al. (2007) is the East-West finding across two sittings (June 2024 P2 Q40; June 2019 P2 Q40); the 7-9 band is missed for lack of AO3 and balance (June 2023 P1 Q22; June 2024 P1 Q26).
Reaching 7-9 on the 9-mark Assess
The 9-mark Assess splits AO1 3 / AO2 3 / AO3 3. AO1: the mechanism — inherited, adaptive, passed on. AO2: run each scenario behaviour through it. AO3: support (universality, blind infants) then cultural difference. Write AO2 first; conclude: inherited core modified by learning.
Describe, explain and difference items
A describe needs two UNIQUE points: 'NVC is inherited' and 'we are born with it' are one point twice. An explain adds the reason: 'blind babies smile' identifies, and 'they never saw one to copy' explains. A difference needs a connective, or it caps at one mark.
Justify every strength and weakness
Naming a strength or weakness is only step one; identification without justification is a recorded error. Use point, why, consequence — 'blind infants smile', 'they never saw a smile to copy', 'so it must be inherited'. A bare identification stalls in the lowest band.
The previous statement asked what non-verbal communication is. This one asks why we have it. Darwin's answer is that we did not learn it — we inherited it.
