Factual knowledge precedes skill
Factual knowledge precedes skill: facts must be in long-term memory before higher skills — analysis, problem-solving — can be used on a topic. Thinking happens in working memory, which holds little; if a pupil works every basic fact out from scratch, those steps fill the space, leaving nothing for the harder demand. Securely learned facts are recalled automatically, freeing that space. A pupil is not "bad at analysis" in general, but short of the facts it needs.
Practice and effort build automatic skill
Practice is repeating knowledge or a skill until it can be done without conscious effort. Willingham's second bullet: proficiency comes from practice and effort, not inborn talent. Practice must be spaced, not crammed, because material revisited after a gap is retained better; it must continue past the first correct answer, or it stays effortful and uses working memory; its purpose is automaticity, freeing attention for higher thinking. It sits alongside Dweck (1.1.3).
Cognitive, physical and social strategies
Bullets c, d and e each ask for strategies. Cognitive (c): teach facts before analysis; space practice and test recall; think about meaning; use worked examples. Physical (d): break a skill into component movements; demonstrate a model; repeat to automaticity; give feedback. Social (e): teach social skills explicitly; give structured practice; praise effort and strategy. The engine: knowledge first, then practice to automaticity.

A teaching tip with no theory
The documented failure: asked about Willingham, candidates suggest something sensible — "give a quiz", "work in pairs" — and stop. The strategy alone is classroom common sense, not psychology. Use a two-part shape: the strategy, then the theory — facts must be secure before skill, and practice makes recall automatic, freeing working memory for the reasoning the task needs.

Describing the theory, not applying it
On application items candidates describe the theory and never touch the scenario — the scheme treats that as AO1 only, and because AO3 needs AO2, it forfeits the evaluation too. Not application: the name, repeating the stem, or copying a scenario line. Application takes a specific detail — the pupil still counting on fingers — and explains it through the theory.
Purely generic responses cannot be credited (June 2019 P1 Summary); stating the theory without applying it, application described as difficult (June 2024 P1 Q4a); the name alone is not enough (June 2022 P1 Q4b).
Strength named but not justified
Statement 1.1.4 requires strengths and weaknesses, and the failure is identification without justification: "a strength is that it is useful" does nothing with the point. A creditworthy strength has three parts — the point, why it follows, and the consequence: it names what to do (teach facts first, then practise to automaticity), so its claims can be tried in class.

Difference answered as two definitions
Asked for the difference between Willingham and Dweck, candidates write a paragraph on each and leave the examiner to spot the contrast — worth one mark at best. A connective earns the second: Willingham stresses securing factual knowledge and practising it, whereas Dweck stresses beliefs about whether ability can grow. A difference wants a connective, not two definitions.

Practice ≠ getting it right once
Candidates treat one correct answer as proof something is learned, but the theory does not. Practice must continue past the first correct answer and be spaced over time, because the goal is not getting it right once but effortlessly. Until it is automatic it still uses the working memory the harder task needs. Material revisited after a gap is retained far better.
Working memory ≠ long-term memory
The two memories do different jobs; blurring them breaks the argument. Working memory is where thinking happens; it is small, so un-automatic basic steps crowd out higher thinking. Long-term memory is vast and lasting; it stores facts and practised skills. Securing facts there lets them be recalled automatically, freeing working memory for the reasoning the task needs.
"Facts first" is about order, not value
The common distortion reads this as facts instead of thinking, and attacks it as rote learning. It is about order, not value: facts are the precondition for skill, not a replacement; their purpose is to free the working memory thinking runs in. Willingham stresses thinking about meaning. The sharper weakness: stressing knowledge first can push creative work later.
Willingham is not Dweck (nor fixed ability)
Both theorists sit in this block, both talk about effort, and candidates answer one with the other. Willingham (1.1.4): factual knowledge must be secure before skill; practice builds automaticity. Dweck (1.1.3): beliefs about whether ability can grow shape the response to difficulty. Neither says ability is fixed — that is the fixed mindset Dweck studies as an obstacle.

Reach the 7-9 band on a 9-mark Assess
The 9-mark Assess splits AO1 3 / AO2 3 / AO3 3, and the yearly weakness is AO3 and balance. Define the parts used; read the scenario's details through the theory; give a supported strength and weakness; end with a judgement. AO2 before AO3, in continuous prose — not bullets.
Read the command word
Match the command word. Describe (2): two unique points. Explain (2): knowledge + scenario link (AO1 + AO2). Strength/weakness (4): each point justified and applied. Compare (2): similarity + difference, connective. Assess (9): knowledge, application, evaluation, conclusion.
Apply before you evaluate
Write the applied point (AO2) before the evaluation (AO3): AO3 cannot be credited without AO2, so a strong evaluation on an unapplied answer scores nothing. Application uses the scenario's own detail, not the name. Starting with evaluation leaves the application too thin.

Skill — the higher-level things we do with knowledge: analysing, solving problems, reasoning, thinking critically.
