The four schema terms, defined precisely
Children build their own understanding through four terms. Schema: a package of knowledge about an object, action or idea, built from experience. Assimilation: fitting a new experience into an existing schema unchanged. Accommodation: altering a schema, or making a new one, when it will not fit. Equilibrium: balance when schemas explain what the child meets; a misfit causes disequilibrium, driving change until it returns.
Each stage is defined by ability, not age
Children pass the four stages in a fixed order and cannot skip one; ages are guides, abilities define each stage. Sensorimotor (birth-2): learns via senses and movement; gains object permanence. Pre-operational (2-7): language and symbols, but egocentric, shows animism, cannot conserve. Concrete operational (7-11): can conserve, reasons logically about real objects. Formal operational (11+): reasons abstractly and hypothetically.
Educational use: readiness and discovery
Turn the theory into classroom practice through three consequences. Readiness: teach at the stage the learner has reached — an abstract task set to a concrete operational child brings failure. Concrete materials: counters, blocks and jugs before symbols. Discovery learning: the child builds knowledge, so lessons are activity-based and child-centred. Intelligence is not fixed but the growing quality of the schemas built.

Egocentrism ≠ animism
Both are pre-operational features and are easily confused. Egocentrism is being unable to see a situation from another person's point of view — the child assumes everyone shares their view. Animism is treating an object as though it had thoughts or feelings, such as saying a teddy is sad. Ask whether it is about a person or an object.
Describing the wrong stage
Asked about one stage, candidates describe a neighbour — pre-operational and concrete operational are swapped most often, as both cover primary-age children. Anchor each stage to one ability: object permanence (sensorimotor), failing to conserve (pre-operational), conserving real objects (concrete operational), abstract reasoning (formal operational).

Difference asked, two definitions given
Assimilation and accommodation are opposites, examined together, so wording decides the mark. Two definitions side by side earn one mark — the difference is only implied. The second mark needs a connective: whereas, however, in contrast. Secure: assimilation fits the experience into the existing schema unchanged, whereas accommodation changes the schema.

Strength named but not justified
Statement 1.1.2 requires strengths and weaknesses, and marks leak when a point is named but not explained. "Piaget used a small sample" identifies without justifying. The mark is the consequence: because the sample was small and from one setting, the ages may not generalise. Add the "which means that…" clause; "explain a strength" wants the reason, not a description.

Giving only the age range
Writing "the concrete operational stage is 7 to 11" and stopping is not a description. The age band is a guide, not the definition. Examiners want the cognitive ability, so the age should be the second half of your sentence, never the whole of it. Pair every stage with what the child can and cannot do.

Improvement answered with a weakness
If a question asks how the research or theory could be improved, saying what is wrong scores nothing. An improvement is a change you would make — testing a larger, more varied group, or simplifying the task wording so it measures the child's reasoning. It must be relevant to this study and within the researcher's control.

Concrete vs formal operational
Both stages reason logically, so candidates blur them. A concrete operational child (7-11) reasons only about real, present objects they can see or picture. A formal operational young person (11+) reasons about the abstract and hypothetical — "what if" problems. An imaginary task probes formal operational thinking, which the younger child lacks.
Stage ages vary; no stage is skipped
Two beliefs cost marks. "The ages are fixed" — they are not: Piaget fixed the order of the stages, but the age each child reaches them varies, and the evidence for a stage is how the child reasons, not their birthday. "A clever child skips a stage" — no: each builds on the one before, so a fast learner moved through earlier, not skipped. Development is gradual.
Assimilation is the no-change case
Because assimilation sounds active, candidates use it for any new learning — but it is the no-change case: the experience fits an existing schema untouched (a new breed filed as "dog"). Accommodation is the change case: it does not fit, so the schema is altered or replaced. Disequilibrium is not failure but productive — the discomfort pushes the child to accommodate.
Match the command word
Read the command word. Describe (2): two unique points. Explain (2): knowledge plus its scenario link (AO1 + AO2). Describe the difference: use a connective. Assess (9): knowledge, application, balanced evaluation, conclusion. State one feature: a feature, not a definition.
The name is not application
Application (AO2) uses the scenario's own detail. Naming the character repeats the stem; copying a stimulus line is not use of it. Quote the behaviour: Ravi said the taller glass had more after watching it poured, so he cannot conserve. AO3 needs AO2, so apply first.
Reach the 7-9 band on a 9-mark Assess
The 9-mark Assess is AO1 3 / AO2 3 / AO3 3; the weakness is AO3. Define terms, apply each to the scenario, then give one supported strength and one supported weakness (validity, reliability, ethics), and a judgement. Continuous prose, balanced, not bullet points.
