Minor injuries: cause and treatment
0413 wants the cause AND simple treatment for three minor injuries. Winding is a blow to the abdomen affecting the diaphragm; treat by bending forward, loosening tight clothing, breathing slowly. A cut or graze breaks the skin (impact or scraping); clean it, apply pressure to stop bleeding, then cover it against infection. A blister is fluid under the skin from friction; cover it and do NOT burst it, which raises infection risk.
Bruise, strain, sprain: what is damaged
Three soft-tissue injuries differ by cause and structure. A bruise is a direct blow that bursts blood vessels under the skin (discolouration). A strain damages a MUSCLE by overstretching or tearing, often without a warm up -- a pulled hamstring. A sprain damages a LIGAMENT (bone to bone at a joint) by twisting the joint -- a rolled ankle. A tendon (muscle to bone) is hurt similarly by overuse. Muscle = strain, ligament = sprain.
RICE: one precise verb each
RICE is Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation, each with one precise verb. Rest = stop using the part at once, which PREVENTS further damage (not just "aids recovery"). Ice = a pack wrapped in cloth, never on bare skin, which REDUCES swelling and pain (not stops). Compression = a firm, not tight, bandage that REDUCES swelling. Elevation = raising the part above heart level, which SLOWS blood flow (not stops). Apply soon after the injury and continue over hours.

RICE verbs overstated (stops vs reduces)
Each letter of RICE has one precise verb, and candidates overstate it. Ice REDUCES swelling and pain -- not STOPS it; some swelling still happens. Elevation SLOWS blood flow -- not STOPS it. Rest PREVENTS FURTHER INJURY, not just "helps recovery". Lock each: Rest prevents, Ice reduces, Compression reduces, Elevation slows.

Repeating an injury already given
When a question asks for injuries DIFFERENT from ones already named in the stem or a table, candidates repeat one and score zero. Read exactly which injuries are already supplied, then name new ones. With only six minor injuries (winding, cut/graze, blister, bruise, strain, sprain), track which are used so a "different" one is never a repeat.

Answering "minor" with a major injury
When a question asks specifically for a MINOR injury, some candidates give a major one -- a fracture, dislocation or concussion -- outside the 0413 minor-injury scope, scoring zero. Only winding, a cut/graze, a blister, a bruise, a strain or a sprain count as minor. Check the category named before choosing an injury.

Strain and sprain swapped
Strain and sprain are constantly muddled. A strain damages a MUSCLE by overstretching or tearing; a sprain damages a LIGAMENT by twisting a joint. Naming the wrong structure -- "a sprain tears a muscle" -- loses the mark even when the injury name is right. Fix the pair to the structure: muscle = strain, ligament = sprain.
One-sided answer to a comparison
"Describe a difference" or "compare" a strain and a sprain is often answered with a fact about only ONE of them -- what a sprain is, with nothing on a strain. A comparison needs both sides explicit: a strain damages muscle by tearing WHEREAS a sprain damages a ligament by twisting a joint. State the point for each injury, not just one.
Bursting a blister to release fluid
A common wrong treatment is to burst or pop a blister to "let the fluid out". This is the opposite of the correct action: the intact skin over a blister protects the raw tissue underneath, so bursting it exposes the area and increases the infection risk. Cover a blister with a plaster or dressing and leave it intact to heal. Only the covering, not the bursting, earns credit.
Ice stops swelling (it only reduces it)
Because ice is what students link with "fixing" swelling, many assume it stops swelling completely. In fact swelling is the body's natural response to injury, and ice only REDUCES how much builds up, by slowing blood flow. Elevation draws the same over-claim -- it SLOWS blood flow, not STOPS it. A promptly iced injury still swells, just less.

Match the command word
Watch the command word. "State" wants the four words or injury name only; "describe" wants what each step or injury involves; "explain" wants WHY each step helps or how the injury happens. Over-elaborating a "state" answer wastes time; a bare "explain" answer is capped.
Develop the RICE letters, do not copy them
If the stem already lists the four RICE letters, rewriting those words earns nothing -- using part of the question is flagged every sitting. Explain what the performer does at each stage and give its precise effect (prevents, reduces, reduces, slows).
Apply treatment to a named activity
Tie the treatment to a named injury in a named activity rather than describing RICE in the abstract -- a netball player who rolls an ankle, or a footballer winded in a tackle. Application to the named activity is the most repeated thing examiners reward here.
