Cognitive stage: the thinking beginner
The cognitive stage is the first stage -- a complete beginner. They think hard about every part because nothing is automatic yet, so movements look jerky, with large, frequent errors. With no internal feel for the skill, they rely on demonstration (visual guidance) and physical guidance to picture a correct attempt. Feedback is mostly extrinsic (from a coach), most useful straight after each attempt, since they cannot yet detect their own errors.
Associative stage: practising to refine
The associative stage is the middle, practice stage. The performer has grasped the basic pattern and practises to make it more consistent, so errors become fewer and smaller and movements more fluent. They rely less on demonstration; guidance is now more verbal -- a coach names a fault rather than reshowing the skill. They start to develop their own feel for a good attempt (intrinsic feedback), so feedback mixes extrinsic and growing intrinsic.
Autonomous stage: automatic & fluent
The autonomous stage is the final, expert stage. The skill is automatic (habitual) and needs little conscious thought, so performance is fluent and consistent. Errors are rare and small, self-corrected using the performer's own kinaesthetic (intrinsic) feedback. Because the mechanics no longer need thought, attention is freed for tactics and reading the game. Not zero errors or feedback -- they still fine-tune occasionally, far less than a beginner.

Vague characteristic, not applied to a sport
Asked to "explain" a stage, a vague phrase like "makes fewer/no mistakes" is not enough -- it does not say WHY errors reduce (the skill becomes automatic / internal feedback develops) and is not tied to a real situation. Full credit needs the characteristic applied to a named activity, e.g. an associative-stage netball chest pass becoming more consistent.

Same characteristic reused for two stages
Asked for a characteristic of two stages, candidates sometimes give the same point twice in different words instead of two distinct ones -- e.g. "makes errors" for both, rather than "large, frequent errors" (cognitive) versus "fewer, smaller, self-corrected errors" (autonomous). Name which stage each point belongs to, and check no point fits the other stage too.

When a question asks for a range across the stages, some candidates only describe the cognitive stage (the beginner) and never move on to the associative or autonomous stage. If the mark scheme wants examples spanning the stages, stopping at the beginner leaves marks unclaimed. Cover every stage the question asks for, not just the easiest first one.

Cognitive vs associative confused
Cognitive and associative stages are easily blurred. In the cognitive stage the performer thinks hard about every part and makes large, frequent errors. In the associative stage they already have the basics and practise to refine them, so errors are fewer and movement more fluent. "Has the basics but still inconsistent" is associative, not cognitive.
Associative vs autonomous confused
Associative and autonomous stages are also confused. An associative performer is more consistent but still needs some extrinsic feedback and thinks about technique. An autonomous performer is automatic, needs little thought, and relies mainly on intrinsic feedback. "Consistent and improving" is not automatically autonomous -- only a habitual, self-corrected skill is.
Stages are gradual, not jumped
Learners are not slotted into a stage overnight and do not jump straight from beginner to expert. Movement along the three stages is gradual, driven by practice, coaching and experience. Describing a performer as suddenly "becoming autonomous" after a single session, or treating the stages as fixed boxes rather than a continuum, misrepresents how learning progresses.
Autonomous performers still make errors
Because the skill is "automatic", students think an autonomous performer is perfect and needs no feedback -- this overstates it. They still make occasional small errors and still use feedback; only its type and frequency change. Instead of frequent extrinsic feedback after every attempt, they mostly self-correct with intrinsic feedback, needing a coach only occasionally.

Name the stage, be precise, explain, apply
Build the answer in steps: name the stage (cognitive/associative/autonomous); use a precise characteristic ("large, frequent errors", not "bad"); for "explain", give the reason, not just the WHAT; and apply it to a named activity.
Describe wants WHAT, explain wants WHY
Watch the command word. "Describe" wants WHAT the characteristic is; "explain" wants WHY -- e.g. errors fall because the skill becomes automatic and internal feedback develops. Explain answers here too often stay descriptive; add the reasoning.
Tie every point to a named activity
Tie every point to a named activity. A cognitive-stage swimmer learning front crawl needs demonstration and makes large errors; when autonomous, the same swimmer swims automatically, focusing on pacing. Not applying to the activity is the most repeated Paper 1 criticism.
