Arousal and the Inverted-U (Yerkes-Dodson)
Arousal is a state of physical and mental alertness or readiness to perform, ranging from very low to very high. It is a neutral term -- neither good nor bad in itself. The Inverted-U theory (Yerkes-Dodson law) states that performance improves as arousal rises to an optimal point, then declines if arousal keeps rising and the performer becomes over-aroused. Plotted as performance against arousal, this rise-then-fall forms an upside-down U-shaped curve.
Optimal arousal: fine vs gross skills
The optimal point differs by skill. Fine skills (small, precise movements such as a golf putt) need a LOWER optimal arousal, as too much makes the small muscles shaky. Gross skills (large-muscle power or speed such as a rugby tackle) need a HIGHER one to generate force. Either side of the optimal point performance drops: under-arousal leaves a performer slow and not ready; over-arousal brings tension, narrowed attention and lost fine control.
Anxiety: cognitive and somatic, plus causes
Anxiety is a negative emotional response to a threatening situation (unlike neutral arousal). It has two components: cognitive anxiety is the mental part (worry, negative thoughts, poor concentration); somatic anxiety is the physical part (raised heart rate, sweating, muscle tension). Common causes include the importance of the event (a final vs a friendly), fear of failure, evaluation by others, an unfamiliar venue or opponent, and high expectations.

Cognitive vs somatic anxiety
The topic's key trap. Cognitive anxiety = the MENTAL part (worry, negative thoughts); somatic anxiety = the PHYSICAL part (raised heart rate, sweating, muscle tension). Candidates give a somatic example for cognitive anxiety, or mislabel the pair as "physical and mental" not the precise terms. Hook: cognitive = cogitating (thinking); somatic = soma/body.

Arousal answers not applied to the sport
Arousal questions name a specific activity or performer, yet answers are often generic textbook theory that never links back to THIS performer in THIS sport. Some drift into another topic (motivation, goal setting) instead of alertness or readiness; others, free to choose their activity, pick one hard to apply arousal to, capping the application marks.

Technique name vs description mismatch
Mental rehearsal, visualisation and deep breathing are closely related and get swapped: a candidate names "visualisation" but then describes mental rehearsal. Keep each locked to its action -- mental rehearsal = mentally practising the movements/technique; visualisation = picturing a successful outcome; deep breathing = slow, controlled breaths that lower heart rate.

Repeating a technique the question excludes
A question may exclude a technique ("other than deep breathing") or already name one in the stem, then ask for a further method. Candidates repeat the excluded or already-given technique instead of offering a new one, so it scores nothing. Re-read the stem, note what is ruled out, and give a genuinely different technique from the remaining range.

Arousal is neutral, not anxiety
Arousal and anxiety are not the same. Arousal is a NEUTRAL state of alertness or readiness, from very low to very high -- being highly aroused is not automatically bad. Anxiety is a NEGATIVE emotional response to a threatening situation. Candidates define arousal as if it were worry or nerves; keep the definition neutral (readiness to perform), separate from anxiety.
Fine and gross optimal arousal swapped
The optimal arousal level is often matched to the wrong skill type. Fine skills (precise, small-muscle -- a golf putt) need a LOWER optimal arousal, since high arousal makes small muscles shaky; gross skills (powerful, large-muscle -- a rugby tackle) need a HIGHER one to generate force. Saying a fine skill needs high arousal, or a gross skill low, reverses the relationship.
More arousal is not always better
A common wrong belief is that arousal and performance rise together without limit -- the more "psyched up" the better. The Inverted-U theory shows performance improves only up to an optimal point; beyond it the performer is over-aroused (too tense, narrowed attention, lost fine control) and performs WORSE. Each skill and performer has its own optimal point.
Match the command word
Read the command word. "Describe" wants WHAT the theory or technique is; "explain" wants WHY it works or why arousal changes performance; "evaluate" or "discuss" wants a judgement. "Explain" answers left at description level lose marks.
Apply it to a named activity
The most repeated Paper 1 criticism is a generic answer with no sport named. When a question gives, or lets you choose, a performer or activity, apply the theory to THAT context -- e.g. what over-arousal does to a golfer's putt -- not to arousal "in general".
Develop a new point, don't repeat the stem
Repeating information already in the question -- restating "the performer feels anxious" as your own point -- is flagged every sitting and earns nothing. Develop a NEW point beyond the stem: the type of anxiety, its cause, or a technique that would help.
