Skill: a learned action
Skill is a learned action, built up through practice, coaching and experience -- not something a performer is born with. It is carried out with efficiency (little wasted energy), consistency (the result is repeatable) and accuracy (it achieves the intended outcome), in the minimum time. A skill is always a named action (e.g. a tennis serve), never a raw physical trait, and can always be improved further.
Ability: an inherited trait
Ability is an inherited, stable and enduring trait that underpins the capacity to perform a skill -- a performer is largely born with it and it changes only slowly. Abilities are the underlying capacities a skill is built on: flexibility, reaction time, balance, coordination, agility and strength. An ability is a general trait, never a named action -- "good balance" is an ability, "a handstand" the skill built on it.
From ability to skill: the factors
Skill is built on ability -- abilities are only the foundation, and become skill through practice, coaching and experience. The syllabus factors that make skill level vary between performers are age and maturity, culture, motivation, anxiety, arousal conditions, facilities, environment, and teaching and coaching. Any of these can speed, slow or cap how skilled a performer becomes.

Skill = learned, ability = inherited
The topic's key definition trap. Skill is learned (through practice and coaching); ability is inherited. Candidates often swap the two -- writing "ability is developed through practice" (that is skill) or "skill is something you are born with" (that is ability). Lock the pairing: skill = learned, ability = inherited.
Match the example to the term
Even with the definitions right, candidates often give an example of the wrong type: naming a technique such as "a serve" as an example of ability, or naming a raw trait such as "flexibility" as an example of skill. The rule -- an ability is a general inherited trait; a skill is a specific, named, learned action. Always match the example to the correct word.
Name a factor, then explain how
Naming a factor is not enough for credit -- the mark scheme rewards the mechanism. "Motivation affects skill" scores little because it never says how: motivation drives a performer to practise more and persist; better facilities allow more frequent, higher-quality practice. Always add the "because..." explaining how the factor speeds up or slows development.
Apply it to a named activity
Answers stay weak when left generic instead of applied to a named performer or activity. "Coaching matters" in the abstract scores less than showing how, say, a lack of local coaching limits a young swimmer's stroke technique. Whenever a question names an activity or performer, tie every point back to that named context, not skill development in general.
Motivation is not arousal
Motivation and arousal are distinct factors students often merge. Motivation is the drive to practise and persist, determining how much and how often a performer trains. Arousal is the current level of alertness/readiness -- too little or too much limits how well a skill is learned or executed. One is a long-run driver of practice; the other a momentary state.
Practice is not a 'factor'
When asked for factors that cause variation in skill level, two answers earn nothing: repeating practice itself (the process the factors act through, not a factor), and naming a characteristic of skilled performance (fluent, consistent, accurate) instead of a cause of variation. Name one of the eight syllabus factors instead.
High ability isn't automatic skill
A wrong belief: that strong natural ability means a performer is already skilled. Ability is only the raw foundation -- it does not become skill by itself. High ability with poor coaching or little practice can leave a performer less skilled than a well-coached one of average ability. The reverse -- that skill is genetically fixed -- is also wrong: skill is learned.
Match the command word
Match the answer to the command word. "State" or "identify" wants only the factor named -- don't over-write. "Explain" wants the mechanism and its effect on skill, applied to the named context. This stops you over- or under-writing the answer.
Factor, mechanism, then apply
For "explain how a factor affects skill level", give a three-step chain: name the factor, explain the mechanism (how it speeds up or slows development), then apply it to a named performer or activity. A definition that is never applied caps the marks.
Balance a 'discuss' answer
For "discuss" or "to what extent" questions, give a balanced answer weighing more than one factor: ability sets a foundation, but the surrounding factors usually decide the skill reached. Don't treat one factor as the whole story, and reach an overall judgement.
