Four nutrients — function and sources
Four nutrients each have a distinct function. Carbohydrate is the main energy source for muscle contraction. Fat is a secondary/reserve energy source that also insulates and protects organs. Protein is for growth and repair of muscle and other tissues. Water is not an energy source but regulates body temperature (sweating) and transports nutrients and oxygen. A full answer gives the nutrient, its function AND a plausible food source (e.g. bread, oily fish, eggs, water).
Energy balance, obesity and needs
Energy balance is energy taken in from food versus energy expended through activity. Intake equal to expenditure keeps weight stable; intake above it (positive balance) stores the excess as fat and, over time, causes obesity; intake below it (negative balance) draws on reserves and weight falls. Needs differ by sex (males more, from greater muscle mass and metabolic rate), age (a teenager's growth spurt raises them) and activity level (active far exceeds sedentary).
Glucose, respiration and glycogen
Carbohydrate is digested to glucose, which enters the blood. Glucose can be used at once in respiration in the working muscles to release energy (glucose + oxygen -> carbon dioxide + water + energy). Glucose not needed yet becomes glycogen, stored in the muscles and liver and converted back later. If glycogen stores are full, further excess glucose becomes fat — linking to energy balance and obesity. Examiners want this chain, not just "carbohydrate gives you energy".

Answered the wrong lifestyle choice
Diet is only one of several lifestyle choices affecting a measure such as VO2 max. Asked how diet affects it, candidates sometimes answer with an unrelated choice — smoking or poor sleep — instead of eating. Stay on the named choice: give a diet-specific mechanism, e.g. carbohydrate-rich eating fuelling better training. Re-read the stem for WHICH choice is asked.
Digest (### 2.2): diet as a lifestyle choice affecting a physiological measure (e.g. VO2 max) is confused with an unrelated lifestyle factor (s22 P13 Q3b).
Unbalanced diet — generic, not applied
Asked for the effect of an unbalanced diet, candidates often give a generic answer ("you will feel tired") with no activity-linked consequence. A mark-scheme answer needs a chain: a distance runner who eats too little carbohydrate stores less glycogen, so it runs out earlier and they cannot maintain pace. The activity-linked consequence scores, not "tiredness".

Glucose ≠ glycogen
Glucose is the simple sugar from digesting carbohydrate, used directly in respiration to release energy. Glycogen is its storage form — glucose not needed becomes glycogen, stored in the muscles and liver and converted back later. Candidates swap the words: "glycogen is used in respiration" (no — that is glucose) or "glucose is stored" (no — it is stored as glycogen).
Function or source, not both
A nutrient question usually needs the function AND a plausible food source; naming only a food, or only a function, drops a mark. "Avocado" alone does not state that fat is a reserve energy source, and "growth and repair" alone does not name a protein source such as eggs. Give both halves, and match the source to the nutrient.
Energy-balance sign and direction
Energy balance = intake - expenditure, so a positive result means MORE was taken in than used (a surplus, stored as fat) and a negative means less (a deficit, weight loss). Candidates subtract in the wrong order and flip the sign, drop the minus on a deficit, or call a negative balance "positive" because the number looks large. Keep intake first and trust the sign.
Carbohydrate is main, fat is reserve
Carbohydrate is the body's main (primary) energy source for muscle contraction; fat is the secondary/reserve source, which also insulates and protects organs. Candidates reverse these — fat as the main source, or carbohydrate as the reserve — which loses the mark. Carbohydrate is the primary supply used first; fat is the reserve backup.
Only eating fat causes obesity
Students assume obesity comes from eating too much fat, but it results from a positive energy balance — more energy in than expended — whatever nutrient the surplus is. Excess carbohydrate or protein is stored as fat too, if intake exceeds expenditure. State it as "intake greater than expenditure", not "too much fatty food".
Apply to a named activity
Always apply diet and energy answers to a named physical activity — a marathon runner, a games player, a gymnast — so the mechanism is concrete, not generic. Failing to apply the answer to the named activity is the single most repeated criticism across every Paper 1 sitting.
Check: diet, or wider lifestyle?
Read the stem to see whether it asks about diet specifically or a wider set of lifestyle choices. A diet question needs a diet-specific mechanism — energy balance, glycogen — not a switch to smoking or sleep. The wrong lifestyle choice, however well answered, scores nothing.
Use precise terms, not "energy"/"tired"
Use mark-scheme vocabulary — energy balance, glucose, glycogen — not vague words like "energy" or "tired". For an "explain" answer give the chain: what the issue is, why it has that effect, and how it hits the performer. Stopping before the mechanism caps the mark.
