Learn each environment noun with its article
Gender is unpredictable from the ending, so learn every noun WITH its article: el medio ambiente (masc. despite -e), la contaminación, el calentamiento global, el cambio climático, la capa de ozono, la deforestación, el efecto invernadero, los recursos naturales, las especies en peligro, la basura. The full table is in the note; el medio ambiente is the single most-tested gender trap.
Solutions vocab + opinion connectives
Solutions: reciclar / el reciclaje, ahorrar energía, las energías renovables, proteger la naturaleza, reducir la contaminación, plantar árboles. Opinion connectives (key to the Writing Range mark): en mi opinión, pienso que; por un lado… por otro lado…; (no) estoy de acuerdo con; deberíamos / hay que + infinitivo; además, sin embargo. Wider global issues (Area E): la pobreza, el hambre, la guerra, la desigualdad, los derechos humanos.
Drawn from real examiner reports.
Short sentences cap the Writing Range mark
These topics are opinion-heavy, so the Q3 Range warning bites hardest: no subordinate clauses / all short sentences caps Range at 3-5. Upgrade El medio ambiente es importante. Debemos reciclar. to Pienso que el medio ambiente es muy grave, porque si no reciclamos, el cambio climático empeorará — opinion marker + porque/si clause + future tense.
Digest "Paper 4 Writing": Q3 Range capped at 3-5 without subordinate clauses, varied tenses and opinion markers (all sittings).
medio ambiente ≠ "doing sport"
Candidates confuse the fixed phrase el medio ambiente (the environment) with ideas about medio (half/middle/means) or outdoor sport, translating word-by-word. Learn the three words as ONE fixed phrase.
Digest (Area C): "weaker candidates misread medio ambiente as doing sport outdoors" (s23 P41 Q3b Task 2).
-a/-e nouns that are actually masculine
Several nouns break the "-o masc., -a fem." default, and guessing gender from the ending is a top Accuracy error:
Digest "Gender & number agreement": article/adjective agreement a top Writing error every sitting; Reading gender slips e.g. la padre (s23 P21 Q4a).
Agree contaminado/a; contaminación is fixed
Keep the adjective contaminado/a/os/as agreeing with its noun; do not confuse it with the noun la contaminación (pollution, invariable): el aire contaminado, el agua contaminada (agua takes el but is feminine), los ríos contaminados. Adjective-noun agreement is a top Accuracy error — match gender AND number.
Digest "Gender & number agreement": adjective-noun agreement a top recurring Writing Accuracy error (general FL trap).
Use para (not por) for purpose
Use para + infinitive for purpose ("in order to") when proposing solutions; using por here is a recurring error. Correct: Reciclamos para proteger el medio ambiente; hay que ahorrar energía para reducir la contaminación. por marks cause/agent (contaminado por las fábricas = by the factories), not purpose — por vs para is on the Q3 checklist.
Digest: "Correct use of por and para" on the Q3 Range checklist and common-errors list (all sittings).
Use hay, not tiene/es, for "there is"
Use hay ("there is / there are") for existence; do not substitute tiene (has) or es/son (is/are). Correct: Hay mucha contaminación en las ciudades. Wrong: Tiene mucha contaminación… / Es mucha contaminación…. The digest's Q3 improvement list names this exactly: avoid tiene where hay is required, and vice versa.
Digest "ser/estar, por/para, hay": Q3 improvement list — avoid tiene where hay is required and vice versa (all sittings).
Environment is an opinion topic, not weather
Two false beliefs recur:
Digest Area C/E medio ambiente misreading + "Gender & number agreement" applied to this topic's exception nouns (general FL trap).
Frame: problem → cause → solution
Structure every answer as problem → cause → solution: (1) name the problem with its correct article, never just es malo; (2) link cause and effect with a clause (si no reciclamos, habrá más basura); (3) solve it with deberíamos / hay que + infinitive.
Lift Range: clause + opinion + connective
To push Range above the short-sentence ceiling, build in at least one subordinate clause (porque, si, cuando, aunque), one opinion marker (pienso que, en mi opinión) and one connective (además, sin embargo, por otro lado) in every paragraph.
Show a range of tenses
Vary the tense to signal Range: state the problem in the present (hay mucha contaminación), a consequence in the future (el planeta sufrirá), and the solution with the conditional deberíamos; a past cause can use the preterite/imperfect.
This topic covers environment/pollution vocabulary, solutions vocabulary, and the opinion/argument phrases needed to discuss problems and solutions at IGCSE level — the global-issue register the digest names for Area E, "The international world".

| Spanish | English |
