Learn holiday vocabulary with its article
Learn each holiday/celebration noun with its article so the gender is automatic (tested across all four papers): las vacaciones (holidays), el viaje (trip), la playa, la Navidad, el cumpleaños, la Nochevieja (New Year's Eve), los fuegos artificiales (fireworks), la fiesta. Useful verbs: celebrar, regalar, disfrazarse, pasarlo bien/mal. Note las vacaciones is always plural — fui de vacaciones, never "la vacación".
Preterite = events; imperfect = background
Narrating a past holiday uses two tenses together. Preterite = completed one-off events: Fui a España, visité el museo, comí paella, vi los fuegos. Imperfect = the background — weather, description, how things were: Hacía calor, había mucha gente, el hotel era bonito. Key irregular preterites: ir/ser (fui, fuiste, fue, fuimos, fuisteis, fueron), hacer (hizo sol), ver (vi), dar (di), estar (estuve).
Drawn from real examiner reports.
hizo vs hice for weather
Weather in a past narrative uses hacer in the third-person impersonal, and candidates write the first-person form by mistake:
Writing "yo fue" instead of fui
Ir and ser share identical preterite forms (fui, fue, fueron...), and holiday narration leans on ir (fui a...), so the person is easily mismatched:
ser/ir preterite confusion (*yo fue* for *fui*) — s23 P41 Q3a Task 3; Writing common-errors list, all sittings.
Imperfect for a single completed event
A holiday narrative needs both past tenses; swapping their jobs is a top Accuracy error:
"durante la excursión visitaba un museo" (s23 P41) and "el sábado pasado iba a una tienda" (w23 P41) — preterite/imperfect confusion penalised under Accuracy.
Dropping hace from a time-ago phrase
Dating a past holiday needs hace + [time period] ("... ago"), and candidates drop the hace:
Time construction with *hace* poorly understood — *hace 100 años* vs bare *100 años*; *hace unos días* vs *unos días* (s23 P21 Q6a, P22 Q4b).
A dropped accent flips the tense
In the preterite the final accent carries person and tense; drop it and the word becomes a present-tense form:
Accent pairs that flip person/tense (*llevó/llevo*) invalidate the answer — s23 P21 & P23 Key Messages.
Tense choice is not about how long ago
A false belief: tense choice depends on how long ago something happened, not on the type of action:
ser/ir confusion and preterite/imperfect sections together (s23 P41 Q3a; s23/w23 P41 tense notes) show the misconception is about action type, not time distance.
Plan the narrative as a preterite timeline
For a past holiday (Writing Q3, Speaking): (1) list 4-5 events in order as preterite verbs — fui, visité, comí, vi, volví. (2) add an imperfect opener for the weather — Hacía calor y había mucha gente. (3) add one imperfect sentence for how you felt.
Check -car/-gar/-zar yo-forms
Every -car/-gar/-zar verb changes spelling in the preterite yo-form: saqué (not sacé), jugué (not jugé), empecé (not empezé), llegué (not llegé). The change is only in the yo form; every other person is regular.
Raise your Range mark with connectives
To move above 5 for Range, link events with connectives and subordinate clauses, not short sentences: primero, luego, después, aunque, mientras. Anchor the time with a hace + time phrase (Hace dos años...).
This topic covers holiday and festival vocabulary and narrating a past holiday or celebration, combining the preterite (events) with the imperfect (background).
