Learn food nouns with their article
Group food by meal, category and drink, and learn each noun with its article. Comidas: el desayuno, la comida, la cena, la merienda. Fruta vs verdura is the Listening trap — fruit: la manzana, el plátano, la naranja; vegetables: la patata, la zanahoria, la cebolla. Otros: la carne, el pescado, el pan, el arroz. Bebidas: el agua (feminine, takes el), el zumo, la leche. Full tables are in the note.
Order politely; quantity + de + noun
A cafe/restaurant role play needs a few fixed structures. Para pedir: quiero un café, por favor; ¿me puede traer la cuenta?; the polite podría/quisiera. Para preguntar: ¿qué recomienda?, ¿cuánto cuesta? Cantidades: un kilo de manzanas, una botella de agua — quantity + de + noun, with no article after de. En la mesa: la cuenta, la propina, el camarero, la carta.

Fruta vs verdura: know the category
La fruta and la verdura are both feminine and easy to mix up, and Cambridge Listening tests the category distinction, not just single words: el tomate is botanically a fruit but goes with las verduras; la patata is a vegetable, not a grain. When a task sorts por categoría, read the category word — the trap is a plausible food from the wrong category.

Name the food, then judge if it is healthy
Food tasks usually want a judgement, not just a list; reports note candidates naming an unhealthy food but never saying so. Don't only list como pizza y hamburguesas — say whether it is healthy (..., que es comida basura). Signal the verdict with comida sana vs comida basura, and to compare use es más sano que....
Digest: naming an unhealthy food but not saying it is unhealthy (s23 P42 Q2 Task 2); general Writing trap of answers that ignore the specific angle.
No article after de in a quantity
The quantity pattern is quantity word + de + noun, with no article between de and the noun: un kilo de manzanas, not un kilo de las manzanas; una botella de agua, un poco de pan. English "a kilo of the apples" tempts an extra las/el, but Spanish drops it — as in demasiado azúcar, bastante fruta.

gustar agrees with the food, not you
Gustar agrees with the thing liked, not the person — a frequent slip because many food nouns are plural. Me gusta el pescado (singular) but me gustan las verduras (plural), NOT me gusta las verduras. Don't drop the preceding a: a mí me gusta. Avoid yo gusto, se gustan. Same for encantar: me encantan los postres.
Digest, gustar/encantar verbs: malformations (me gusto, mi gusta, se gustan) on the Writing common-errors list every sitting; 'le encanta' not 'se encanta' (s23 P23 Q4d).
el agua but el agua fría
Agua is feminine but takes el in the singular because it starts with a stressed a — a pronunciation rule, not a gender change. So the adjective stays feminine: el agua fría, not el agua frío; in the plural, las aguas frías. The same governs el aula. Judge gender from the noun, not the el in front of it.

gustar is not a normal verb
Learners assume gustar works like English "to like" (subject likes object) and conjugate it for the person: yo gusto el pescado. In fact it agrees with what is liked; the person is an indirect object: me gusta el pescado, NOT yo gusto; me gustan las verduras (plural forces gustan). Identify the food first, then match the verb.
Digest, gustar/encantar verbs: malformations (me gusto, mi gusta, se gustan) on the Writing common-errors list every sitting.
Match the structure to the food task
Decide what the task asks before writing: an order, a description of a meal, or a judgement about healthy eating — each needs a different structure, not one vocabulary dump. This stops you writing correct-but-generic food vocabulary that misses the specific instruction.
Order with a polite frame
For a restaurant role play, use a polite frame and slot in the item: quiero..., ¿me puede traer...?, or more courteously quisiera.../me gustaría.... Examiners reward correct register more than an unusual dish, so ¿podría traerme la cuenta? beats a blunt quiero.
Always state the health verdict
On a healthy-eating task, state the judgement explicitly — don't leave it to be inferred: comida sana/basura, que es/no es sano, es mejor comer... que.... In Reading, check whether the sentence frames the food positively or negatively before answering.
