School nouns: learn each with its article
Learn each school word with its article so its gender is fixed. Asignaturas are mostly feminine (la historia, la biología, la informática), but three are masculine: el inglés, el español, el arte. Instalaciones: la biblioteca, el gimnasio, el laboratorio, el instituto; and el aula — feminine, but takes el in the singular (las aulas plural). Full lists are in the note.
Opinion + porque + reason, and school rules
A school opinion has three parts: an opinion phrase, the subject, and a reason with porque. Phrases: (no) me gusta/gustan..., mi asignatura favorita es..., pienso que.../opino que...; then me gusta la biología porque el profesor es divertido. For rules, use an impersonal verb + infinitive: hay que llevar uniforme, se debe respetar a los profesores, (no) se permite usar el móvil.
Drawn from real examiner reports.
asistir a needs the preposition a
Asistir (to attend) must be followed by a before the place — dropping it is a frequent slip: asisto a mi instituto, not asisto mi instituto. It is also a false friend: it means "to attend", not "to assist/help" (that is ayudar). Keep the a in every person: asisto a clase, asistimos a la reunión.
(general FL trap)
Not every -a noun is feminine
Several school words break the -o/-a pattern, so guessing the article from the ending is a gender error examiners flag. Masculine -a nouns: el idioma (el idioma que estudio, not la idioma), el mapa, el día. Feminine ones that defeat "-e = masculine": la clase, la asignatura. Fix: learn each noun as article + noun.
Digest: gender & number agreement is a top Writing error every sitting; cf. the gender slip 'la padre' (s23 P21 Q4a).
Right topic, but no opinion or rule
Reports note candidates giving a general answer instead of the task's specific angle. Don't just list subjects (estudio matemáticas) — add the opinion (me gusta... porque...) or comparison (prefiero... a...) asked for. Don't just say hay una biblioteca — add an opinion. For a rule, use hay que / se debe / (no) se permite, not a vague statement.
Digest, Area A: describing a specific class/activities is hard (s23 topic 5; w22 topic 4); general trap of answers that ignore the specific angle.
Plural subject needs a plural verb
Describing the school day uses regular verbs (estudiar, empezar, terminar, llevar), and the ending must match the subject. Mis clases empiezan a las ocho — NOT empieza, because clases is plural. Yo estudio y mi hermano estudia — the yo/él endings differ (-o vs -a). A singular verb with a plural subject is flagged as an accuracy fault.
Digest: singular verb with plural subject / plural verb with singular subject flagged on the Writing common-errors list every sitting.
porque is not por qué
When you justify an opinion, use porque — one word, no accent, "because": me gusta la biología porque es interesante. It is not por qué — two words, accent on qué, "why", which opens the question: ¿por qué te gusta? Writing por qué where you mean porque is an accuracy error, and in Reading it can invalidate the answer.
Digest: 'por qué' (why) ≠ 'porque' (because); writing porque as the answer word can invalidate it (w23 P21 Q4e; s23 P22 Q4e).
The -a means feminine shortcut fails
Learners assume gender follows the final letter ("-a = feminine"). School vocabulary punishes this: el idioma is masculine despite the -a; el aula is feminine but takes el in the singular (stressed a), so learners wrongly give it a masculine adjective — yet it stays feminine (el aula grande). Fix: learn each noun as article + noun.
Digest: gender & number agreement is a recurring top Writing error across all four sittings; school vocabulary supplies several -a exceptions.
Reading tests synonyms, not keywords
In Reading, don't hunt for the exact keyword — Cambridge builds these on synonyms: el instituto for "school", las normas for "rules", me encanta for "I like". Read the whole sentence around the match; in Writing, vary your own words to show range.
Frame an opinion in three parts
Build a "what do you think of..." answer in three moves: opinion phrase (pienso que, me gusta) + subject + porque + a real reason. A bare me gusta la historia caps you low; pienso que es útil porque aprendo mucho earns the opinion and justification marks.
Use impersonal verbs for school rules
For a school rule, use an impersonal structure + infinitive: hay que llevar uniforme, se debe respetar, no se permite usar el móvil. The verb stays infinitive — hay que llevar, never hay que llevas.

School subjects (las asignaturas) — mostly feminine, but watch the exceptions:
| Spanish | English | Article |
|---|---|---|
| las matemáticas | maths | las |
| la historia | history | la |
| la geografía | geography | la |
| las ciencias | science | las |
