The organisation ladder: organelle up to organism
Learn the levels in order, smallest to largest: organelle → cell → tissue → organ → organ system → organism. Define each with the two-element form "a group of [the level below] working together to perform a function": a tissue is a group of similar cells; an organ is a group of different tissues; an organ system is a group of organs. An organelle is a specialised structure inside a cell (e.g. a nucleus); a cell is the basic structural and functional unit.
Give an animal and a plant example at each level
Learn a concrete example at each level. Animal (human): organelle = nucleus; cell = red blood cell; tissue = muscle tissue; organ = heart; organ system = circulatory system; organism = human. Plant: organelle = chloroplast; cell = palisade mesophyll cell; tissue = xylem or palisade tissue; organ = leaf; organ system = shoot/transport system; organism = whole plant. Read the question: muscle is a tissue, but the heart (several tissues) is an organ.
Cells differentiate (specialise) to build tissues
Moving from cell to tissue depends on cell specialisation. Most body cells are differentiated (specialised) — their structure is adapted to one job, e.g. a red blood cell has no nucleus and is packed with haemoglobin. Undifferentiated cells (e.g. stem cells) are not yet specialised and can divide to produce specialised cells. A tissue forms when many cells of a similar specialised type work together, e.g. muscle tissue is many muscle cells that contract together.

A group of cells is not an organ
A tissue is a group of SIMILAR cells working together; an organ is a group of DIFFERENT tissues working together. Writing "an organ is a group of cells" (that is a tissue) or "a tissue is a group of organs" (the ladder upside down), or dropping "working together to perform a function", all lose marks. Cells build a tissue; tissues build an organ.
Organ vs organ system
An organ is one structure made of different tissues (e.g. the stomach, the heart, the leaf). An organ system is several organs working together for one function (e.g. the digestive system: mouth, stomach, small intestine and more). Do not call a single organ a "system", and do not name just one organ when the question asks for the whole system.
An organelle is not a tiny cell
An organelle is a specialised structure found INSIDE a cell (e.g. the nucleus, a mitochondrion, a chloroplast), not a miniature cell. A cell is the whole building block; organelles are its working parts. Do not draw organelles floating free between cells, and do not treat "organelle" and "cell" as the same level of the ladder.
Differentiated vs undifferentiated
A specialised (differentiated) cell has a structure adapted to one job; an undifferentiated cell (e.g. a stem cell) has not yet specialised and can divide to form specialised cells. Candidates swap these words — calling a stem cell "differentiated" or a specialised muscle cell "undifferentiated". Unspecialised = undifferentiated; already adapted = differentiated.
Convert units before dividing
Cells and organelles are viewed under a microscope, so magnification appears here: M = image size / actual size. The classic error is dividing a length in millimetres by one in micrometres without converting: 1 mm = 1000 µm. Convert both to the same unit first, keep image over actual, and round only as asked. Magnification is a ratio and has no units, so "×500 mm" is wrong.
Do not invert the ladder
Build the ladder smallest to largest: organelle → cell → tissue → organ → organ system → organism. A common slip is reversing it (putting organ before tissue) or skipping a level. Each step up combines several of the level below, so a tissue is many cells, an organ is several tissues, and a system is several organs — never the other way round.
Answer definitions in two-element form
For any "define / what is a..." question, use the fixed form "a group of [the level below] working together to perform a function", and give one animal and one plant example. Memorising the ladder in order means you can always name the level above and below the one asked.
Magnification: M = image / actual
Use the formula M = image / actual. Step 1: convert both lengths to the SAME unit (1 mm = 1000 µm). Step 2: substitute and calculate. Step 3: quote magnification as "×number" with no unit. Show the substitution so a slip in the final line still earns method marks.
Show every stage of the working
In calculation questions the examiner awards method marks for the conversion and the substitution, not just the final number. Write the unit conversion, then the formula with the numbers in, then the answer — so even if you slip on the final line you still bank the working marks.
