Two pressure formulas: solids and fluids
Pressure = force per unit area: , unit pascal (Pa = N/m²) — for a solid resting on a surface. For a fluid at rest the pressure difference with depth is : = depth (m), = fluid density (kg/m³), = gravitational field strength (N/kg). Absolute pressure adds the atmosphere: , with kPa. Both are on the formula sheet — pick the one that fits the context.
Pressure acts equally in all directions
At a given depth in a fluid at rest, pressure is the same in every direction — up, down and sideways. So holes at equal depth squirt water at equal speed whichever way they face, and a hydraulic pipe transmits force in any direction (Pascal's principle). The mark scheme wants "equally in all directions" (or "in all directions at the same depth"); "in all directions" alone can lose a mark when depths are being compared.
Hydraulics multiply force
Two pistons share one incompressible fluid, so the pressure is equal at both: . With the output force is larger — — a force multiplier. A U-tube manometer works the same way: a height difference between the columns gives the pressure difference . Examiners test the area-ratio to force-ratio link.

Give the answer in the unit asked
After rearranging for , the depth comes out in metres — but if the question asks for centimetres, convert (×100) before writing the final answer. Method correct with the answer in the wrong unit still loses the final mark. Re-read the required unit (cm, kPa, mm) at the very end.
June 2022 Paper 1P Q9(a)(ii) — most candidates scored 2 out of 3 because they correctly rearranged P = hρg and substituted correctly but did not convert their depth answer from metres into centimetres as the question required.
cm² to m²: divide by 10 000
Both and need SI units. Length: 45 cm = 0.45 m. Area is the trap — , so 25 cm² = 0.0025 m². Dividing area by 100 (as for length) instead of 10 000 makes the pressure 100 times wrong. Convert area with ÷10 000.
January 2020 Paper 1P Q4(b) — many candidates calculated an area without converting cm² to m², giving an answer 10 000 times too large.
Add atmospheric for absolute pressure
gives only the gauge (excess) pressure due to the fluid column. Absolute pressure is . If the question gives an atmospheric value (e.g. 100 kPa) or says "show that", add it. Stopping at Pa instead of 126 000 Pa caps the mark.
January 2020 Paper 1P Q2(b)(i)–(ii) — candidates who did not add atmospheric pressure to the calculated gauge pressure failed the "show that" requirement, capping their score at 2 marks; the examiner noted this as the most common source of error on this item.
State "equally in all directions"
To justify equal water jets from holes at the same depth, you must say pressure acts "equally in all directions" at that depth. Noting only that the holes are at "equal depth" is not enough for the mark — depth alone does not explain why a sideways-facing hole matches a downward-facing one.

Pressure is force per unit area
The definition needs the ratio: pressure is "force per unit area", , unit Pa. "Force on an area", "force pushing down", or "how much force there is" drop the "per unit area" and score zero. Two elements are required — the ratio (force ÷ area) and the unit pascal.
p = F/A vs p = hρg
is for a solid pressing on a surface (a book on a table). is for the pressure at a point inside a fluid from the weight of fluid above it. Same unit (Pa), completely different situations — using to find pressure at depth in a liquid scores zero. Choose by the physical context.
Pick the formula, then substitute
Ask first: solid on a surface → ; fluid at depth → (gauge). Then decide whether absolute pressure is wanted — if so add . Write the formula in symbols, substitute SI values, and give the answer in Pa.
Rearrange before you substitute
For "find " or "find " problems, rearrange algebraically first — e.g. — then put the numbers in. This avoids arithmetic slips, and a correct substitution earns a mark even if the final value is wrong.
Match the unit the question wants
Check the demanded unit before writing the final line: convert m to cm, Pa to kPa, or cm² to m² as needed. A right number in the wrong unit loses the accuracy mark. Re-read the stem for "in cm" or "in kPa" at the end.
Explain "all directions" by collisions
For "why pressure acts equally in all directions": particles move randomly → they hit surfaces of any orientation → equal collision rate gives equal force per unit area → equal pressure in all directions at that depth. Not "gravity pulls it down" — that is only downward.
