Two pressure formulas: p = F/A and p = hρg
Pressure = force per unit area: ; unit pascal (Pa = N/m²). Use this when a solid pushes on a surface (a brick, a heel). For a fluid at rest, the pressure at depth below the surface is , where = vertical depth (m), (rho) = fluid density (kg/m³) and N/kg (Cambridge). Cambridge also states that pressure in a fluid at rest acts equally in all directions at the same depth. Both formulas give pressure in Pa.
Fluid pressure acts equally in all directions
At a given depth in a stationary fluid the pressure is the same in every direction — up, down and sideways. Holes at the same depth on different sides of a tank give jets that travel equal distances. Cambridge requires "equally in all directions" (or "at the same depth"). (E) In a hydraulic system pressure is transmitted equally, so a larger output piston gives a larger force: .
Show that / Determine needs the formula
When a question says "Show that the pressure is approximately 850 Pa" you must: (1) state the formula ; (2) substitute the correct SI values; (3) evaluate to reach the stated answer. Rearranging the numbers to match 850 without writing the formula scores zero. "Determine" and "Calculate" also need the formula and SI substitution: write the equation, substitute with units, evaluate, and state the unit.

Pressure is force per unit area
The Cambridge definition has two required elements: (1) force per unit area — not "force on an area" or "divided by surface" — and (2) the unit Pa (or N/m²). Forms like "force on a surface" or "the force exerted" score zero. Correct: pressure is force per unit area; ; unit Pa. Write the unit as Pa or N/m² (with the ²), never "N/m".

Convert depth cm → m before p = hρg
Both and need SI units: depth in metres (45 cm = 0.45 m) and area in m² (50 cm² = 0.0050 m²; divide by 10 000, not 100). Using a depth in centimetres directly in makes the answer 100 times too large. The final mark needs the correct numerical value AND the unit Pa.

(E) Add atmospheric pressure for absolute
(E) gives only the extra pressure from the fluid column (gauge pressure). Absolute pressure = atmospheric + gauge: , with Pa. If a question provides an atmospheric value and asks for the pressure at depth, add . Forgetting this is the most common Extended error.
h is depth below the surface
In , is the vertical depth from the free surface down to the point of interest — not the total height of the container and not a horizontal distance. If a tank holds liquid to a height of 2 m and you want the pressure at the base, m, measured from the top surface downward.
p = F/A for solids, p = hρg for fluids
is for a solid pressing on a surface (a boot on mud); is for the pressure inside a fluid due to the weight of fluid above it. Both give pressure in Pa but apply to different situations. Using to find the pressure at depth in a liquid scores zero. Decide the formula from the physical context before substituting.
Formula → SI units → substitute → unit
For any pressure question: (1) state the formula ( or ) in symbols — a mark even if the arithmetic is wrong; (2) convert to SI (m, m², kg/m³, ); (3) substitute with units; (4) write the unit Pa. A missing or wrong unit loses the final mark.
Show that: reach the printed value
On a "show that" question the answer is already printed, so the examiner marks your method. Write the formula, substitute in SI units, evaluate, and show your value matches the printed one (e.g. "≈ 850 Pa"). Simply restating the printed value with no working scores zero.
Force arrow is perpendicular to the surface
Pressure acts perpendicular to a surface, so draw the force arrow at right angles to the surface it presses on — an arrow along the surface would be friction, not pressure. Measure depth vertically from the free surface, and write the unit Pa (or N/m²).
