The four texture types
Texture is counted by independent melodic lines, not performers. Monophonic -- one line, even when a choir sings it in unison or octaves. Homophonic -- one melody over a chordal accompaniment in roughly the same rhythm (block chords). Polyphonic (= contrapuntal) -- two or more INDEPENDENT lines of equal weight. Heterophonic -- simultaneous slightly different versions of the SAME tune (one plain, one ornamented), not different tunes.
Texture vocabulary and effects
Unison -- all on the identical pitch. Doubled in octaves -- one line an octave apart (still monophonic). Parallel motion -- parts moving together by the same interval (3rds, 6ths). Solo/tutti -- one performer / full ensemble. Antiphonal -- separated groups answering each other, not soloist-then-tutti. Cluster chord -- adjacent pitches sounded together, harshly dissonant. Drone -- a sustained note under moving material (bagpipe, tambura).
Musical devices in texture
Repetition -- an idea restated exactly. Sequence -- restated at a NEW pitch, same shape; ascending if rising, descending if falling. Imitation -- one part echoes a motif just heard. Ostinato -- a short pattern repeated persistently. Riff -- the pop/jazz equivalent of an ostinato, on guitar, bass or keyboard. Alberti bass -- a broken-triad keyboard figure (low-high-middle-high, e.g. C-G-E-G), a classic homophonic accompaniment.

Polyphonic vs heterophonic
Both layer more than one line, so they get confused. Polyphonic texture has genuinely DIFFERENT independent tunes, each of equal weight. Heterophonic texture has simultaneous VARIANTS of the SAME tune -- one plain, one ornamented -- so it sounds like one melody blurred, not two. Ask whether the lines are different tunes or versions of one tune.
Imitation vs canon: elaborate it
Imitation is one part echoing a motif just heard -- not always exact. Canon is STRICT, continuous imitation of a whole line at a fixed distance. Whichever you name, examiners want elaboration: the NUMBER of parts, the INTERVAL of imitation, and the TIME LAG (e.g. a canon in three parts, a bar apart, a 5th higher). The label alone rarely scores full.

Sequence: name the direction
A sequence restates an idea at a new pitch, keeping its shape -- and it must be labelled ascending if the repeats rise or descending if they fall. Naming the wrong direction earns nothing, even though "sequence" itself is right. Check the pitch of each repeat against the sound before committing to a direction.

Ostinato vs riff: same idea
Ostinato and riff name the SAME idea -- a short pattern repeated persistently while other material changes around it. Use ostinato in classical and world-music contexts, riff in popular music and jazz (usually on guitar, bass or keyboard). They are not different devices, so do not treat them as a contrasting pair; pick the term that fits the style.
Antiphonal needs answering groups
Antiphonal texture needs separated or opposing GROUPS that genuinely answer each other -- a choir split across a space, or call-and-response between groups. A single soloist followed once by the tutti is not antiphonal on its own; antiphonal requires alternating exchanges between the groups, not just one hand-over.
Drone vs ostinato: sustain vs repeat
A drone is one or more SUSTAINED, unchanging notes held under moving material -- continuous stasis, no rhythmic pattern. An ostinato is a short PATTERN repeated persistently -- repeated motion, not a held note. Both give a constant foundation, but a drone holds a note while an ostinato repeats a figure. Do not use the two terms interchangeably.
Texture is lines, not instruments
Texture is decided by counting INDEPENDENT lines, never performers. A choir in unison, or a tune doubled in octaves, is still monophonic -- one line, however many play. A full orchestra can be entirely homophonic (one tune, block chords). Polyphonic needs two or more lines of distinct shape. Ask "how many independent lines?", not "how many instruments?".

Texture label is only the first mark
Texture is the weakest-answered question type across sittings. Candidates win the first mark by naming the texture, then stop there. Add the supporting detail: which instrument does what, what the accompaniment plays (block chords, Alberti bass, drone), and any imitation's parts and lag. The one-word label is never the whole answer.

Never stop at the one-word label
Treat every texture question as at least two points: name the texture precisely, then add the supporting detail the mark scheme wants -- which instrument carries the tune, what the other parts do, and any imitation's parts and lag or a drone's note.
Count independent lines, not players
Decide texture by the number of INDEPENDENT melodic lines, not by how many instruments play. One tune doubled by many players is still monophonic; one tune over block chords is homophonic however large the band. Only independent lines make it polyphonic.
Match direction and device words
Precision on the exact word earns the mark. An ascending sequence is not credited for a descending one, and vice versa, so match the direction to what you hear. Likewise name the specific device (canon, ostinato, drone), not a vague "it repeats".
