Right-angled → SOHCAHTOA (sin = Opp/Hyp, cos = Adj/Hyp, tan = Opp/Adj). Otherwise: a matching side–angle pair → sine rule; two sides + the included angle (SAS — Side-Angle-Side) or all three sides (SSS — Side-Side-Side) → cosine rule.

Quoting the sine or cosine rule incorrectly
Even though both are on the formula sheet, students copy them down wrongly.
Some students quoted the cosine rule and/or sine rule incorrectly on June 2024 Paper 1H (Q19), despite the formula sheet.
Rearranging the area/cosine formula wrongly
Algebra slips when solving for a side, or the cosine rule for an angle.
On Nov 2024 Paper 1H (Q16) students rearranged $\tfrac12 ab\sin C$ incorrectly when solving for the radius.
Area: C is the included angle
Using a non-included angle (not between and ) in .
On Nov 2024 Paper 2H (Q25) the successful route used $\tfrac12 ab\sin C$ with $C$ the included angle; weaker attempts mis-assumed the side lengths.
Forgetting cos⁻¹ for the angle

Choosing the wrong rule
Using the sine rule for two sides and the included angle (SAS), where only the cosine rule works, or the cosine rule when a side and its opposite angle are known. Match the rule to the data first.

Write the formula, substitute, then rearrange
Quoting the rule and showing the substitution earns method marks; keep full accuracy to the end.
Match a, b, c to A, B, C
Label each side opposite its angle ( opposite , and so on) before substituting, so the sine/cosine rule pairs are correct.
