Adding the squares when you should subtract
When finding a shorter side, students add instead of subtracting, scoring zero for the method.
Students who added 51² to 24² scored zero on the first two method marks (Nov 2024 Paper 1H, Q10); the same adding-not-subtracting error appeared on June 2024 Paper 1H (Q11).
Rounding a length too early
Rounding an intermediate length (e.g. 6.7 → 7) then using it loses the final accuracy mark.

Identify the hypotenuse first
Mark the right angle; the side opposite it is the hypotenuse. That tells you whether to add or subtract.
Keep full decimals to the end
Store an intermediate length (e.g. a base diagonal) in the calculator rather than writing it rounded; round only the final answer to the stated accuracy.
Sense-check the hypotenuse
The hypotenuse must be the longest side. If a "shorter side" comes out longer than the hypotenuse, you have added instead of subtracted — redo it.
