Factorise first, always
On a tough algebraic-fractions question, factorising any quadratics (and spotting a difference of two squares) usually unlocks cancelling and earns method marks.
Cancel only whole brackets
You may cancel a factor like that multiplies the whole top and bottom, but never a term inside a sum. If it is not a bracket, do not cancel it.
Clear fractions to solve
To solve (not simplify), multiply every term by the common denominator to remove all fractions, then solve the resulting equation, watching the signs.
Factorise every quadratic FIRST, then cancel
On a "simplify" or "show that" fraction, factorise every numerator and denominator before doing anything else. Cancelling common brackets collapses it; expanding first produces an unmanageable quartic that rarely recovers.
