Jumping to the calculator with no working
On the non-calculator paper, leaping to the final fraction (e.g. straight to ) with no improper-fraction or cancelling step shown loses method marks — and can hide errors.

Not using algebra for a recurring decimal
When told to "use algebra to show" a recurring decimal equals a fraction, a non-algebraic answer scores at most 1 mark.
On Nov 2024 Paper 2H (Q15) non-algebraic attempts were capped at 1 mark.
Subtracting the wrong multiples of x
Choosing and (or other mismatched powers) so the recurring tails do NOT cancel — you must pick powers whose decimal parts are identical before subtracting.
Students who scored zero on Nov 2024 Paper 2H (Q15) used incorrect combinations to subtract.
Multiplying by 100 the wrong way
Percentage → decimal divides by (); decimal → percentage multiplies by (). Reversing these — writing or — is a frequent slip. Move the point two places and check the size looks sensible.

Assuming every fraction terminates
A fraction in lowest terms terminates only when its denominator has just s and s as prime factors; otherwise it recurs. So terminates but and recur. Rounding a recurring decimal and treating it as exact loses accuracy.

Give the fraction in its simplest form
After the algebra, cancel down (e.g. ) — an un-simplified fraction can cost the final mark.
Line up the recurring tails first
Pick the powers of so the two decimals have identical recurring parts, then subtract. For one repeating digit use ; for two use ; for a delayed repeat like use and so the s cancel.
Show every line on a non-calculator paper
Method marks reward the improper-fraction, common-denominator and cancelling steps. Jumping straight to the answer risks all of them and hides arithmetic slips, so write each stage even when you can already see the result.
