A rate: one quantity per another
A rate tells you how much of one quantity there is per unit of another, e.g. km/h, g/cm, dollars per pound. The word per ("for each") signals a division: .
Average speed = total distance ÷ total time

Dividing the wrong way round
A rate is "top quantity per bottom quantity", so density is mass volume — not volume mass. Putting the two numbers into the calculator in the wrong order gives the reciprocal of the right answer.
Treating minutes as decimals of an hour
For average speed in km/h the time must be in hours. A time of hours minutes is hours, not hours — the minutes is of an hour. Treating the clock reading as a decimal is the most common slip.
Converting mixed time to hours is a frequent stumbling block on average-speed questions.
Averaging leg speeds over a journey
For a multi-leg journey the average speed is total distance total time, not the average of the leg speeds. Averaging the speeds only works if every leg takes the same time; otherwise it gives the wrong answer.
Giving the rate in the wrong time unit
If the question asks for litres per minute, an answer in litres per hour is wrong — convert first. Check whether the rate is wanted per second, per minute or per hour before you divide, and match the answer to it.
Mishandling a decimal divisor
Dividing by a decimal such as is not the same as dividing by : , not . Watch small decimal divisors — dividing by a number below makes the answer larger.
Check your answer's units match the rate
If the question wants a flow rate in litres per minute, your answer must come out as (litres) (minutes). Writing the units beside each number before you divide makes the right division obvious and catches upside-down answers.
Use the D = S × T triangle to rearrange
Store speed, distance and time in the triangle : cover the one you want. Distance , speed , time . It stops you dividing the wrong way round.
Cancel trailing zeros before dividing
For big-number rates, cancel matching zeros first: population density becomes . Simpler numbers mean fewer slips.
