School management system — two separate jobs
The syllabus names two purposes; a question normally targets one. Learner registration and attendance: entering a new learner's personal, contact and enrolment details once, then recording present or absent at every lesson or school day, so attendance can be totalled and absences followed up. Learner performance, including CAL: storing marks, grades, test results and behaviour, processing them into averages and comparisons, and delivering computer aided learning.
Performance data — input, processing, output
Learner performance runs in three stages. Input: personal details, marks and grades, test results, behaviour, attendance and punctuality data. Processing: average grades calculated, marks compared with forecast grades, class averages created, data saved, graphs created. Output: a termly or yearly report printed or sent to parents, progress against forecast grades sent, statistical analysis produced. Describe questions credit all three: name one fact from each.
Computer Aided Learning — adaptive software
CAL is credited from five ideas: a method of learning; an application, software or program; used to help a student learn about a subject; tailored to the individual student; and able to take account of previous assessments when setting learning objectives. Two carry the answer: CAL is software, and individually adaptive. CAL is not a way of testing a student, nor a way of recording data about them: it changes what it sets next from how that learner already performed.

CAL ≠ "learning on a computer"
"CAL is when you learn using a computer" and "a program that teaches a subject" only restate the name. Both miss the distinguishing points: CAL is tailored to the individual student, and it can take account of previous assessments when setting learning objectives. Add the adaptive clause — software that sets easier or harder material from how the student scored earlier.
Registration ≠ attendance
Registration happens once, when a learner joins the school: their personal, contact and enrolment details are entered and a record is created. Attendance is recorded repeatedly, at every lesson or school day, showing whether that already-registered learner is present or absent. Treating them as a single action answers a different question.
Attendance half ≠ performance half
The syllabus gives a School management system two separate jobs, and candidates blend them. A question about how the system records whether a learner is present is not answered by writing about grades, reports and CAL — and a performance question is not answered by describing the register. Keep the other half out entirely.
One stage cannot score all six marks
Asked to describe inputs, processing and outputs, some candidates write everything they know about one stage — usually a long list of inputs — and leave the other two blank. Credit is capped at three marks per stage, so six input facts and nothing else reach at most half of the six marks. One specific fact from each stage is worth more than five drawn from the same one.
Attendance % divided the wrong way
Attendance percentage is days attended divided by days possible, then multiplied by 100 — 171 out of 190 school days is 171 ÷ 190 × 100 = 90%. Dividing the wrong way round (190 ÷ 171) gives a figure above 100% that cannot be an attendance rate, and leaving out the multiplication gives 0.9 rather than 90%. Check the answer sits between 0 and 100 before writing it down.
Mean = total ÷ how many scores
The processing stage calculates average grades, so an average is the total of the stored marks divided by how many marks there are. Scores of 60, 75 and 90 total 225, and 225 ÷ 3 = 75. Two errors recur: totalling the marks and stopping there, and dividing by the wrong count — by 2 or by 4 when three scores were given. Count the values being averaged before dividing.
Evaluating without the paper system
An evaluate question about computerising school records wants a judgement against the paper-based system it replaces — totals and averages produced automatically rather than by hand, reports generated rather than copied out. A bare opinion that it is better, with nothing named to compare against, is not an evaluation. Name what it depends on: accurate, timely data entry.
Spot which half the stem names
Scan the stem for keywords. "Registration", "attendance", "present/absent" point at the registration-and-attendance half. "Performance", "grades", "marks", "results", "CAL", "learning" point at the performance half. Settle which the question is set on, then use only that half.
Answer in three labelled blocks
For a describe-the-system question, write Input:, Processing: and Output: as three labelled lines, each naming one specific fact. This mirrors how the mark scheme is built, makes every stage easy to credit, and stops a long opening list crowding out the other two.
Every CAL answer needs the adaptive clause
Never stop at software plus learning. State that it is software used to help a student learn a subject, AND that it is tailored to the individual student, adapting what it sets next to their previous assessment results. That second half separates full marks from a vague answer.
Never name a real product
Cambridge gives no credit for brand or trade names of software or hardware, so naming a real school-management or register app scores nothing even when it is the right kind of system. Write "the system" or "a School management system", and describe generically what it does.
