Printers — laser, inkjet, dot matrix
Laser: a laser charges a drum that attracts powdered toner, fused onto the paper with heat — fast, high-volume text, but expensive to buy with costly cartridges. Inkjet: droplets of liquid ink sprayed through nozzles — high-quality colour photos, but slower, and nozzles dry out or clog if unused. Dot matrix: pins strike an inked ribbon (impact) — noisy and low resolution, but the only type that can print multi-part carbon forms and continuous stationery.
Actuator — the output partner of a sensor
An actuator converts a processed electrical control signal into a physical movement or action — opening a valve, turning a motor, switching a heater on. A sensor (input, 2.1) does the exact reverse: it detects or measures a physical condition (temperature, light) and sends that reading into the computer. Data flows IN through the sensor; a control action flows OUT through the actuator. Together they form an automated monitoring and control system.
Device choice — data type and audience
Two factors decide the right output device. The type of data: numerical, text or graphical data suits a monitor or printer because it can be read directly; sound suits a speaker; a physical three-dimensional model suits a 3D printer, not a flat printer or a screen. The size of the audience: a monitor serves one person or a very small group at close range, while a multimedia projector enlarges the image so a whole room views the same output at once.

Benefit ≠ advantage (no comparison)
A benefit is true of the device on its own; an advantage is true only against a named alternative. The examiners' example is a printer: "the laser printer produces a good-quality printout" is a benefit and earns nothing on an advantage question; "produces a better-quality printout than a dot matrix printer" scores: it has a comparative and names what it beats.
Cost is not a credited comparison
A laser printer's high purchase price and costly toner are genuine characteristics of the device. But examiners rule cost, battery life and storage capacity too subjective on device comparisons, and no longer credit them as technology improves — so "cheaper to run" is true but scores nothing as an advantage. Compare speed, print quality, noise or capability instead.
Touch screen: output ≠ input
The touch screen is examined twice. In 2.1 it is an input device — it detects where and how the surface was touched. Here in 2.3 it is an output device — it displays the image, text, menus and buttons the user sees. Describing the pressing action when the output role was asked answers the wrong half: output is what is shown, not what is detected.
Actuator acts, sensor detects
An actuator does not measure anything. It receives a signal the computer has already processed and produces a physical action out — opening a vent, turning a motor. An answer describing an actuator taking a reading reverses the direction of flow. In a monitoring-and-control question name both halves: the sensor supplying data in, the actuator carrying the action out.
Vague device choice loses the mark
Naming an output device is not enough — the reason must be tied to the data or the scenario. Candidates asked which output device an automated glasshouse used gave general answers instead of a specific device. "Use a screen" or "print it" is too vague; "a monitor, because the numerical readings can be read directly" is what the mark scheme wants.

A drawing is not a prototype
A plotter draws large, accurate technical lines with pens — valuable for design documentation, but flat. A prototype has to be handled and test-fitted, so it needs a 3D printer, which builds a physical object layer by layer from the digital model. Choosing on "large and accurate" alone, without asking what a prototype actually requires, picks the wrong device.
Projector hazards need the cause
"It could hurt someone" is too vague to credit. Name the hazard and its cause: staring at the strong, bright projected light causes eye problems or headaches, because the light is far more intense than a monitor's; and the projector's loose trailing cables are a tripping hazard, or the unit itself can fall and injure someone where people walk past.

Explain/describe needs a "because"
A bare comparative is only half an answer. "The laser printer is faster" fails; "is faster than the dot matrix because it does not have to strike the paper line by line" scores. Start the second half of the sentence with because, so the reason is explicit, not implied.
Never give a brand name
The front of every paper states that trade and brand names earn no credit. Write the generic device name — "laser printer", "multimedia projector", "3D printer" — not a manufacturer or a product line, however well known it is.
Answer the scenario, not the topic
Check who is being asked about and what they need. A room of 40 viewers needs a projector; one operator needs a monitor; an engineering prototype needs a physical object, while design documentation needs a plotter. Output-device knowledge that ignores the stem scores nothing.
Never split a compare with a line
Do not rule a vertical line down the page and list advantages on one side, disadvantages on the other. It prevents a true side-by-side comparison and caps the marks available, even when both columns are individually correct. Write linked comparative sentences instead.
