Holidays, accommodation, activities
Full tables are in the note.
Perfekt: movement = sein, action = haben
Movement / change-of-location verbs take sein: fahren (ist gefahren), fliegen (ist geflogen), schwimmen (ist geschwommen), ankommen (ist angekommen). Verbs for an action/state at the destination take haben: übernachten, verbringen, buchen, planen, besichtigen. Future: werden + infinitive OR present + a future time marker (Nächstes Jahr fahre ich). Ask first: does the verb mean moving, or acting once there?
Drawn from real examiner reports.
Holiday movement verbs take sein
fahren, fliegen and schwimmen are movement verbs and take sein in the Perfekt, never haben. Wrong: Ich habe nach Spanien gefahren → Ich bin nach Spanien gefahren. Wrong: Wir haben im Meer geschwommen → Wir sind im Meer geschwommen. Contrast an action once you have arrived, which keeps haben: Wir haben übernachtet (not a movement verb).
Digest, Perfect tense: "ich habe in die Schule gefahren" (w22); "the perfect tense of fahren was often conjugated with haben" (s23 42); "ich habe geschwommen" (w23) — the most-repeated concrete instance.
Basic participles: gefahren, gegangen
Even constant, basic verbs are often malformed: fahren → gefahren (not gefahrt), fliegen → geflogen (not gefliegt), gehen → gegangen (not gegeht). Wrong: Wir sind nach Italien gefahrt → gefahren. Wrong: Wir sind ins Museum gegeht → gegangen. These strong verbs do not take a regular -t ending, so check the participle rather than guessing.
Digest, Accuracy: "past participles of basic verbs (spielen, gehen, fahren) often incorrectly formed" (s22 42/43); gegeht for gegangen (w22, w23).
lieber is an adverb, never a verb
lieber means rather / prefer to and must attach to a conjugated verb: Ich fahre lieber ans Meer. Wrong: Ich lieber Strandurlaub als Aktivurlaub → Ich mag lieber Strandurlaub... (add a real verb, e.g. mögen). Always ask which conjugated verb lieber belongs to; if there is none, add one — never let lieber stand in for the verb.
Digest, Writing: "lieber misused as a verb" three times across two sittings — "ich lieber Filme als Bücher" for "ich sehe lieber" (s23 43; w23 43).
ans Meer (motion) vs am Meer (location)
Two-way prepositions switch case by meaning. Motion (wohin?) takes the accusative; a fixed location (wo?) takes the dative. Wir fahren ans Meer (an + das, accusative, motion) versus Wir wohnen am Meer (an + dem, dative, location). Same with in: in die Berge (accusative, motion) versus in den Bergen (dative, location). Ask wohin or wo before choosing the case.
Extends the digest case-selection (motion vs location) finding, named in the Accuracy checklist every sitting (s22, w22, s23, w23).
Futur = werden + infinitive, not participle
The future is werden + an INFINITIVE at the clause end, not a past participle: Nächstes Jahr werde ich nach Italien fahren (fahren, infinitive), never werde ich gefahren. Simpler still, German lets you use the present tense with a future time marker: Nächstes Jahr fahre ich nach Italien. Both are correct; mixing werden with a participle is not.
Digest, Accuracy: werden + past participle instead of + infinitive named twice (w23 42).
Keep the reflexive pronoun (sich entspannen)
Reflexive verbs need their reflexive pronoun; under pressure candidates drop it. Ich entspanne mich am Strand (not Ich entspanne am Strand), Ich fühle mich wohl, Ich langweile mich schnell. The pronoun changes with the subject (mich, dich, sich, uns, euch). Leaving it out is a marked error the reports flag.
Digest: reflexive pronouns often omitted under manipulation — sich fühlen (s22 22; w23 22).
haben is not the default for every Perfekt
Because most verbs do take haben in the Perfekt, learners treat haben as the safe default, producing Ich habe nach Italien gefahren and Wir haben im Meer geschwommen — both need sein. The test: does the verb describe a change of location or state (fahren, fliegen, schwimmen)? If yes, use sein; an action with no movement (übernachten, buchen, machen) uses haben.
Plan a trip tense-by-tense, auxiliary first
Build the answer in order. Where you went, auxiliary first (movement → sein: Ich bin geflogen). Where you stayed, with haben. What you did, checking each verb (schwimmen → sein; machen → haben). Then an opinion (present) and a next-year plan (Futur or present + marker).
Check basic participles, do not guess
The marks lost on holiday Perfekt are usually the basic verbs (fahren, gehen, fliegen, schwimmen). Do not assume a regular -t ending: gefahren, gegangen, geflogen, geschwommen are all irregular. Pair each with the right auxiliary (sein for these movement verbs).
Show three time frames in the answer
Top answers cross time frames: Perfekt for the past trip (auxiliary checked), present for your opinion, Futur for next year. Match the tense each bullet signals — a wrong time frame caps Task Completion however fluent. Vary the connective beyond weil.
