Daily routine and time expressions

Telling the time; halb = the NEXT hour
Wie spät ist es? is always answered Es ist … Uhr — unlike English, Uhr is never dropped on the full hour:
- ein Uhr = one o'clock.
- Viertel nach drei = quarter past three.
- halb vier = half past three — halb counts DOWN to the NEXT hour: halfway to four = 3:30, never 4:30.
- Viertel vor vier = quarter to four.
- Mittag / Mitternacht = midday / midnight (no Uhr).
Timetables use the 24-hour clock: vierzehn Uhr dreißig = 14:30.
Time prepositions + reflexive verbs
Time words take fixed (dative) prepositions: am Montag (on Monday) but montags (every Monday, no article); im Januar (month); im Frühling, im Sommer, im Herbst, im Winter — ALL FOUR seasons take im. Days, months and seasons are always CAPITALISED (der Montag, der Winter). Routine verbs split in two: reflexive ones need a pronoun agreeing with the subject — sich waschen, sich duschen, sich anziehen — but aufwachen, aufstehen, frühstücken are NOT reflexive.

Reflexive pronoun dropped under person-shift

Reflexive routine verbs are a named weak point once a sentence is manipulated into a different person — the pronoun is left out:

✗ Sie fühlen gesünder. → Sie fühlt sich gesünder. (sich fühlen = to feel; the pronoun must stay and agree with the new subject.)

Whenever you change the subject of a reflexive verb, check the pronoun still matches.

lieber used as if it were a verb

lieber is NOT a verb — it is an adverb that modifies an ALREADY conjugated verb. Put the real verb first, then lieber:

✗ Ich lieber zu Hause schlafen. → Ich schlafe lieber zu Hause.
✗ Ich lieber Filme als Bücher. → Ich sehe lieber Filme als Bücher.

It recurs when candidates drop the real verb and leave lieber in its place.

Wrong answer shape for wie oft / seit wann

Three time interrogatives need different answer SHAPES; candidates blur them:

wie oft? (how often) needs a frequency expression — jeden Tag, montags; a bare day (Montag) is NOT credited.
seit wann? / wie lange? ask for a starting point or duration — seit drei Jahren — not a clock time.

Mixing them gives an answer that is grammatical but off-question.

halb vier read as 4:30

German halb counts DOWN to the coming hour, the opposite of English "half past". So halb vier is halfway to four = 3:30, not 4:30:

✗ halb vier = 4:30 → halb vier = 3:30
halb sieben = 6:30; halb zehn = 9:30.

Say it back in English ("halfway to four") to catch the reversal.

am Montag vs montags confused

am + a day names ONE specific occasion; the -s adverb form names a HABIT:

am Montag = on (this) Monday.
montags = on Mondays / every Monday — no article, lower-case even though der Montag is a capitalised noun.

For every/habitual use the -s form; for a single occasion use am + day.

Wrong season preposition or lower-case

All four seasons take im, and days/months/seasons are always capitalised nouns:

✗ am Winter → im Winter (im Frühling, im Sommer, im Herbst, im Winter — no exception).
✗ montag, januar, winter → Montag, Januar, Winter.

Capitalisation is scoring-relevant in Writing, not cosmetic.

Treating every routine verb as reflexive

Because many routine verbs are reflexive, learners over-generalise and add a pronoun where none belongs:

✗ Ich stehe mich auf. → Ich stehe auf. (aufstehen is not reflexive.)
✗ Ich wache mich auf. → Ich wache auf.

Test: is it done TO yourself (washing, dressing) or just something you do (waking, getting up)? A reflexive verb still keeps its pronoun.

Exam tips

Anchor every action with a time or sequencer
Never leave a routine action with no time marker. Anchor each one with a clock time (um sieben Uhr, um halb acht) or a sequencing word (zuerst, dann, danach, schließlich) — this turns a bare list into an ordered description the examiner can follow.
Sort reflexive vs non-reflexive first
Sort each verb first. Is the action done TO yourself? Reflexive verbs — sich waschen, sich anziehen, sich beeilen — need a pronoun agreeing with the subject (ich wasche mich, du wäschst dich). But aufstehen, aufwachen, frühstücken take NO pronoun.
Match the question word; check halb & lieber
Match your answer to the question word: wie oft? → a frequency phrase (jeden Tag, montags); seit wann? / wie lange? → a duration, not a clock time. Remember halb vier = 3:30; for a preference, conjugate the real verb then add lieber, never lieber alone.
