Konjunktiv II: würde + inf.; 4 short forms
Konjunktiv II expresses "would" — a hypothetical, wish or polite request. Its all-purpose form is würde + infinitive (at the end): Ich würde gern Tennis spielen. But four frequent verbs use their own one-word forms: sein → wäre, haben → hätte, können → könnte, mögen → möchte. Say ich wäre, never ich würde sein. (Konjunktiv I and the passive are receptive-only here.)
Futur I: werden (present) + infinitive
Futur I is a two-part tense: werden (present, position 2) + an infinitive at the very end: Ich werde Fußball spielen; Wir werden nach Berlin fahren. Present of werden: werde, wirst, wird, werden, werdet, werden. Everyday alternative: with a time phrase (morgen, nächstes Jahr), German often uses the plain present: Ich fahre morgen nach Berlin. Reach for Futur I to stress a prediction or intention. Full table in the note.

wurde/würde are not spelling variants
Because wurde/würde and mochte/möchte look and sound so close, candidates treat them as interchangeable spellings, not two different tenses. wurde = Präteritum "became"; würde = Konjunktiv II "would". mochte = "liked"; möchte = "would like". The give-away: the sentence stops making sense — Ich mochte ein Eis, bitte is not a request.
s23 42 Accuracy names both pairs — "wurde instead of würde and mochte for möchte" — the most repeated conditional-formation fault (s22, s23, w23).
wurde/mochte (past) vs würde/möchte (would)
The most-named conditional error is dropping the Umlaut and reaching for the wrong tense. ✗ Ich wurde gern ins Kino gehen → würde (wurde = Präteritum "became"). ✗ Ich mochte ein Eis → möchte (mochte = "liked"). Keep the pairs apart: wurde vs würde; mochte vs möchte. The Umlaut changes tense and meaning.
s23 42 Accuracy: candidates "often did not form the conditional correctly (wurde instead of würde and mochte for möchte)"; also s22 42 Q2 and s23 42 Q2 Task 3.
Futur I ends in the infinitive
Futur I always sends a bare infinitive to the end — never a past participle (that belongs to the Perfekt): ✗ Ich werde das Buch gelesen → Ich werde das Buch lesen; ✗ Wir werden nach Hause gegangen → … gehen. werden is already correct — only the last word is wrong. Check it is the plain infinitive, not a ge-…-t/ge-…-en participle.
werden + past participle instead of + infinitive named twice in one sitting (w23 42 Q2 Task 4; w23 42(a) Task 5).
Missing a future cue like Pläne or vorhaben
The future can be signalled by vocabulary, not just verb form — miss the cue and you answer in the wrong time frame. The noun Pläne ("plans") points to the future: Was sind deine Pläne? expects an intention. hat … vor means "plans to". Do not mis-read Pläne (a noun) as a verb ich pläne — that loses the cue.
Pläne missed as the future cue across six s23 role-play cards (Cards 1, 3, 7, 8, 9); "hat er vor" (he plans to) overlooked in Listening (w22 12 Q34).
Saying würde sein instead of wäre
For sein, haben, können, mögen, the clumsy würde sein / würde haben is dispreferred — use the one-word Konjunktiv II: ✗ Ich würde haben mehr Zeit → Ich hätte mehr Zeit; ✗ Das würde sein toll → Das wäre toll. For other verbs, würde + infinitive is right (ich würde spielen). Reach for wäre/hätte/könnte/möchte first, würde for the rest.
Infinitive not sent to the very end
In Futur I and analytic Konjunktiv II, the infinitive goes to the very end of the clause — werden/würde sits in position 2, everything else between: Ich werde nächstes Jahr Deutsch lernen. Putting the infinitive straight after werden/würde (✗ Ich werde lernen Deutsch) is a word-order error the Accuracy band penalises, even when the verb forms are right.
Grounded in the Accuracy checklist "word order" named every sitting (s22 42/43; w22 42; s23 42/43; w23 42).
Check the bullet time frame before you write
Read each bullet for its time frame. Does it ask what you will do (future) or what you would do (hypothetical)? Signals: nächstes Jahr, morgen, Pläne vs wenn …, an deiner Stelle. If a time phrase already shows the future, the plain present is fine.
Pick one-word or würde Konjunktiv II
For a hypothetical, pick the form by the verb. Is it sein, haben, können or mögen? Use the one-word Konjunktiv II — wäre, hätte, könnte, möchte. Otherwise use würde + infinitive, the infinitive at the very end — not a participle.
Mix tenses to earn the Range mark
The Range band rewards variety of tense. A strong answer mixes a Präsens, a Perfekt AND a Futur I / Konjunktiv II — werden + infinitive for the future bullet, würde/wäre/hätte for the hypothetical. Do not write the whole piece in one tense.
German expresses "will" with Futur I and "would" with Konjunktiv II — both are compound structures built from an auxiliary (werden) plus a non-finite verb form (an infinitive) at the very end of the clause.
Futur I formula: subject + werden (present, position 2) + … + infinitive (at the end).
