Four photograph types tested in Paper 2
Paper 2 tests four photograph types; name the type and its scale/relief. Ground: eye-level, so near objects look large and far ones small -- scale is not constant. Oblique aerial: angled from a low aircraft; shows relief and a wide area, scale still varies. Vertical aerial: straight down; uniform scale like a map, so distances are measurable if stated, but no relief. Satellite: very high altitude, wide area, to compare patterns over time.
A label names; an annotation also explains
To sketch from a photograph: draw a frame matching the photo's edges; draw ONLY the main outlines (skyline, boundaries, landform edges) with a ruler; leave out decorative detail; add a title and any given scale/north arrow. A label is only the NAME of a feature on a leader line ("beach"). An annotation adds a short note on its cause or significance ("stack -- left when an arch roof collapsed"). Read the command: "label" wants names, "annotate" wants reasons too.
Reading cross-sections and linking evidence
A cross-section plots height against distance -- read off a height or the steepest slope. Gradient = horizontal distance / vertical interval, as "1 in n" (50 m over 2000 m = 1 in 40; bigger n = gentler). Vertical exaggeration draws the vertical scale larger, so a slope LOOKS steeper than it is (horizontal denominator / vertical denominator). Link evidence: cite a feature or grid reference on BOTH photo and map for one located answer.

Stack vs stump on a coastal photograph
On a coastal photograph, examiners repeatedly see landform ID errors: a stack (a tall pillar of rock) called a stump (a lower remnant, the stage AFTER a stack), or an arch misread as "a bridge", with "arch" misspelt "arc". Read what is shown: an arch has sea passing THROUGH an opening, while a stack stands SEPARATE from the cliff.

Value judgement, not observed features
When a photograph shows housing, weaker answers give an opinion -- "the houses look poor" -- instead of what is VISIBLE. Name observable evidence: building materials (corrugated metal, timber), the roof pitch and condition, and the spacing between buildings. "Describe the photograph" wants visible evidence, never an opinion about quality.

Generalising a land-degradation photo
When a photograph shows land degradation, weak answers generalise -- "the land is destroyed" -- instead of specific impacts. State what can be seen: gullying (channels cut into bare soil), exposed topsoil with no vegetation cover, or sheet wash. Do not offer fertiliser or crop rotation as evidence -- those are erosion-reduction methods, not visible damage.

Cross-section completion errors
Cross-section and completion tasks lose marks to technique errors: plotting a point at the wrong height, transposing a labelled feature, a freehand wavy line not a ruled line or curve, and omitting the connecting line. Transfer each point at the correct position AND height, then join them with one ruled or smoothly curved line -- not disconnected dots.

Describing a land-use model, not comparing
Comparing MEDC and LEDC urban land-use models (a diagram), candidates describe surface details -- colours or zone size -- not comparatively. Compare explicitly: which zones each has, where wealthiest and poorest housing sit, and the LEDC "wedge" (sector) pattern rarely used. Use comparative words across BOTH models, not two separate descriptions.

Vague location words on a photo
Locating photo evidence with vague words loses marks. Instead of "near" or "above", place a feature in the foreground, middle-ground or background and left/right, or give a compass direction or grid reference if given. Instead of "about" or "nearly", quote the exact figure or scale with units. Precise, located language earns the credit.

Labelling and annotating are the same
The topic's sharpest definition trap. A label is only the NAME of a feature ("cliff", "arch") -- WHAT it is. An annotation adds a short EXPLANATION of its cause ("arch -- formed where a cave is eroded through a headland"). Treating them as the same means bare names when annotation is asked (losing marks), or paragraphs when only labels are wanted. Check the command.

Photo scale is constant like a map
A map, and a vertical photograph with a stated scale, have a uniform scale -- one centimetre means the same distance everywhere. A ground or oblique photograph does not: perspective makes nearer objects look larger, so scale varies. Measure real distances only on maps or vertical photos; from the others, only relative comparisons ("nearer/further") are reliable.

Cite specific, located evidence
Photograph questions reward precision. Cite specific VISIBLE evidence -- the actual materials or features shown, not a vague judgement ("poor", "a lot"). Then locate it: foreground/middle-ground/background and left/right, or a compass direction/grid reference if given.
Answer the exact command word
Match the command word. "Describe" wants only WHAT is shown, no reasons. "Suggest" wants a plausible reason inferred from the evidence. "Compare" needs comparative language (whereas, higher/lower) across BOTH resources, not two separate descriptions.
Use exact skill vocabulary and figures
Use the skill vocabulary precisely: label vs annotate; ground vs oblique vs vertical vs satellite; gradient as "1 in n". Where a scale is given, quote the exact figure with units, not "about" or "nearly". Precise terms and exact figures lift a Level 1 answer to Level 2.
