How development degrades the environment
Economic development -- industry, commercial farming, mining, logging and roads -- degrades the environment through several interacting processes: soil erosion, desertification, deforestation, pollution of air and water, and resource depletion (using a resource faster than it renews). The key exam point is that these rarely act alone -- clearing forest for cattle ranching, for example, directly increases the risk of soil erosion on the newly exposed land.
Sustainable development manages, not bans
Sustainable development meets present needs without compromising future generations' ability to meet their own needs. It does NOT mean stopping development; it means keeping the environmental cost within limits the environment can absorb or recover from: using renewable resources at a rate that lets them regenerate, cutting pollution through treatment and regulation, and requiring an environmental impact assessment (EIA) before a large project is approved.
Managing environmental risk: real measures
Development and conservation often compete for the same land, resources or funding -- a firm wanting access to a protected forest, or a government weighing a factory's jobs against the habitat it would damage. Managing the resulting risk relies on specific measures, and strong answers name one: protected areas restricting clearance, environmental impact assessments before approval, reforestation, pollution treatment, satellite monitoring, and sustainability agreements.

Sustainable development is not a ban
A definition trap: sustainable development is often answered as if it means NO development, or banning the harmful activity. It actually means managing development to meet present needs without compromising the future, while controlling its environmental cost. Proposing "just stop the mining" as a sustainability measure misses what the term requires.
Name a located activity, not a country
Environmental-impact case studies score far better around a SPECIFIC, named activity and location than a whole country or a generic sector such as "farming". A vague "mining pollutes a country" has no located detail to develop and cannot reach the higher bands. Name the real activity and develop the risks and management around that precise example.

Give management, not just the problem
When a question asks HOW a risk is managed, many candidates re-describe the problem instead, without naming a management measure. A problem description earns no credit against a management question. A creditworthy answer names a specific measure (protected area, EIA, replanting, pollution treatment, monitoring) and explains how it cuts the risk.

Deforestation vs desertification
Easily confused, but different processes in different biomes. Deforestation is the large-scale clearance of FOREST. Desertification is the degradation of semi-arid (dryland) land into desert-like conditions, driven mainly by human land-use pressure like overgrazing and over-cultivation. One removes trees; the other degrades marginal grassland or scrub.
Soil erosion vs weathering
Soil erosion and weathering are not the same. Erosion wears away AND removes topsoil, carrying it off by wind or water once protective vegetation is gone. Weathering is the in-situ breakdown of rock or soil where it sits, with no transport away. Clearing forest, overgrazing and ploughing accelerate erosion by exposing and loosening soil so it can be removed.
Renewable resources can still be depleted
Resource depletion is not limited to non-renewable resources. A non-renewable resource (minerals, fossil fuels) runs down as it is used. But a renewable resource (fish, forest, groundwater) is ALSO depleted if used FASTER than it regenerates -- e.g. pumping groundwater faster than rainfall recharges it. What matters is the RATE of use versus renewal, not the renewable label.
Desertification is not just natural drought
A testable wrong belief: that desertification means a desert spreading outward due to natural drought. It actually means semi-arid land degrading into desert-like conditions, driven mainly by human land-use pressure -- overgrazing, over-cultivation and fuelwood removal. Drought can worsen it, but human pressure usually turns a dry spell into lasting degradation.
Reaching Level 3 on the case study
The 7-mark case study is level-marked on precise detail plus genuine management. For the top band: name a specific activity and location, not a country; link it to a risk with a mechanism (e.g. root loss raising erosion); and explain a management measure that cuts it.
Match the command word
Command words demand different answers. "Describe" wants what the feature IS; "explain" wants WHY; "suggest" wants a plausible reason where none is given; "compare" needs linking words (higher/lower), not two separate descriptions.
Develop 2-3 ideas, do not list
On extended-response and case-study questions the Level 1 vs Level 2/3 discriminator is developing a few ideas, not listing many. An undeveloped list stays at Level 1; two or three ideas, each developed with place detail and a linked consequence, reach the higher levels.
Qualify vague terminology
Vague terms are the most repeated credit-blocker: "resources", "pollution" and "damage" all fail alone. Replace each with specifics -- name the resource, the pollutant, the exact impact. "Chemicals in the river kill fish" scores where "it causes pollution" does not.
