Farm system: inputs, processes, outputs
A farm is a system of inputs, processes and outputs. Inputs: physical (climate, relief, soil, water) and human (labour, capital, seeds/livestock, machinery, policy). Processes: ploughing, planting or rearing, growing and harvesting. Outputs: the primary product (crops or livestock products), by-products (straw, manure) and waste. A key feature is feedback: money from selling outputs is often reinvested as a new input, e.g. fertiliser, seeds or machinery.
Three independent classification pairs
Farming is classified on THREE independent pairs; a farm takes one term from each. WHAT is produced: arable (crops), pastoral (livestock) or mixed (both). WHO for: subsistence (mainly to feed the family) or commercial (to sell for profit). INPUTS relative to area: intensive (high inputs per hectare) or extensive (low inputs over a large area). So a farm can be, e.g., commercial and intensive (market gardening) or commercial and extensive (prairie wheat).
Case study: Ganges intensive rice farming
The Ganges valley (India and Bangladesh) is a classic intensive subsistence rice farm: high labour on a small (~1 ha) plot, mainly to feed the family. Inputs: monsoon rain/river water, fertile alluvial soil, cheap family labour, HYV seeds. Processes: seedlings raised in a nursery, transplanted by hand into bunded flooded paddies, harvested by hand. Outputs: most rice kept, a small surplus sold. Where water allows, two or three crops a year (multiple cropping).

Extensive means low inputs, not big area
Extensive farming is NOT defined by a large area -- its defining feature is a LOW level of inputs RELATIVE to the area. Related trap: to raise an INTENSIVE farm's yield, candidates answer "buy more land" -- but adding land with the same inputs makes it MORE extensive, not more productive. Raise intensive yield by adding inputs per hectare (fertiliser, HYV seeds).

Read specific soil-erosion evidence
Asked to read soil erosion from a photograph, avoid vague phrases like "the land is destroyed". Name the SPECIFIC visible features: gullying (channels cut by running water), exposed pale subsoil where darker fertile topsoil has washed away, and sediment/silt built up at the foot of a slope. Describe what is actually SEEN, not a general judgement.

Pastoral is livestock; big is not extensive
First, pastoral farming means REARING LIVESTOCK (cattle, sheep, goats) for meat/milk/wool -- not growing crops, which is arable. Second, a large area does NOT automatically make a farm extensive: a big commercial ranch may still use high inputs per hectare. Always check both WHAT is produced (arable/pastoral) AND inputs relative to area (intensive/extensive), separately.

Subsistence vs commercial farming
Subsistence and commercial farming differ by PURPOSE, not size. Subsistence farming grows food mainly to feed the farmer's own family, with little or no surplus sold. Commercial farming produces specifically to SELL for profit, usually with a large surplus. A small farm can be commercial and a large one subsistence, so judge by who the output is for, not by area.
Fertiliser and rotation do not stop erosion
Asked how to REDUCE soil erosion, candidates often name fertiliser or crop rotation. Neither stops erosion -- they maintain soil FERTILITY, a different problem. Credited methods physically slow or block water and soil moving down a slope: contour ploughing (rows ACROSS the slope), terracing (flat steps cut into the slope), and planting trees or a windbreak to bind the soil.

Keep inputs, processes and outputs apart
In the farm system, sort each item into the right stage. Inputs go IN (climate, soil, labour, seeds). Processes are ACTIVITIES done to them (ploughing, planting, harvesting). Outputs come OUT (the crop or livestock product, by-products, waste). Common slips: calling "harvesting" an input, or "profit" a process. Profit results from the output, fed back as a new input.
Irrigation raises output, not just ease
A common wrong belief: irrigation's benefit is that it makes farming "quicker" or "easier" -- too vague for credit. The credited point is that irrigation ENABLES INCREASED OR MORE RELIABLE FOOD PRODUCTION: it waters crops through dry spells, can allow a second or third crop a year (multiple cropping), and cuts the risk of total crop failure in a drought.

Nail the 7-mark food-shortages case study
Reach the top band on the 7-mark food-shortages case by naming a real place (e.g. Ethiopia, 1983-85), separating PHYSICAL from HUMAN causes, and giving BOTH short-term (emergency aid) AND long-term solutions (irrigation, better seeds). Link each point, don't just list.
Match the command word
Answer the exact command word. "Describe" = WHAT the resource shows (no reasons). "Explain" = WHY. "Suggest" = a plausible reason for an unfamiliar case. "Compare" = explicit higher/lower statements, not two separate descriptions.
Classify a farm on all three pairs
Classify a described farm with one term from EACH pair (arable/pastoral, subsistence/commercial, intensive/extensive), justified from the resource: e.g. wheat = arable; whole crop sold = commercial; large area, few workers = extensive. Don't stop after just one label.
Compare farms with data, not descriptions
On a "compare" question, use explicit comparative words (whereas, larger/smaller) and quote figures with units from the resource -- e.g. "900 ha, 2 workers, whereas 1.2 ha, 6 workers". Two separate descriptions stay in the bottom band even with correct facts.
