Equatorial climate and its cause
Found in a narrow band near the equator (0°) -- Amazon and Congo basins, Indonesia. Characteristics: high temperatures all year (about 26-28 °C), tiny annual range; very high rainfall (over 2,000 mm) spread evenly, no dry season. Cause: the near-overhead sun all year gives intense insolation; heated air rises (convection), cools and condenses, giving heavy convectional rainfall. The rising belt is the ITCZ, where trade winds converge.
Hot desert climate and its cause
Found roughly 15-30° north and south of the equator -- the Sahara, Atacama, Namib. Characteristics: very low rainfall (under 250 mm); very high daytime temperatures (over 40 °C); a large diurnal range (cloudless nights lose heat). Cause: equatorial air that already rained descends near 30° as dry, high-pressure air holding moisture rather than releasing it. West-coast deserts are drier still: a cold offshore current cools onshore air, and a rain shadow blocks moisture inland.
Amazon deforestation case study
The Amazon rainforest, mostly in Brazil, is the reusable deforestation case study. Causes: cattle ranching (the largest driver), soya farming, logging, mining, road-building and settlement. Impacts: habitat and biodiversity loss (about a tenth of known species), soil erosion, disrupted local rainfall, released carbon dioxide, and loss of indigenous livelihoods. Management: protected areas, sustainable logging, replanting and conservation funding.

Locate hot deserts precisely
Location answers use vague "above/below the equator" instead of compass direction and latitude (e.g. "about 15-30° north and south of the equator"). Name the continent, the latitude band, and north or south. And the driest deserts (Atacama, Namib) sit on the WESTERN side of continents, from cold offshore currents -- often the omitted point.
Digest (## 2.5): hot-desert location answers use imprecise directional language instead of compass direction/latitude, and the WESTERN-side fact is frequently missing (s23 Paper 13 Q4(a)(ii)-(iii)).
Explain WHY deserts are dry
Why deserts are so dry is among the worst-answered questions. Give a named mechanism, not "it's hot so it doesn't rain": air that lost moisture at the equator DESCENDS near 30°, holding moisture rather than releasing it (high pressure); a COLD OCEAN CURRENT cools onshore air on west coasts; OFFSHORE winds keep the interior dry; a RAIN SHADOW sits behind mountains.
Digest (## 2.5): desert aridity mechanisms (offshore winds, cold ocean currents, rain shadow) are very poorly understood across all four sittings (s23 Paper 13 Q4(a)(iv), w22 Paper 13 Q3(a)(iv)).
Equatorial is not hot desert
A sharp substitution error: even when "equatorial" is emboldened, candidates write about the hot desert. The climates are opposites: equatorial = high, constant rainfall (over 2,000 mm, no dry season), tiny annual range; hot desert = very low rainfall (under 250 mm), large diurnal range. An answer about the wrong climate scores nothing.
Digest (## 2.5): a very common substitution error is answering about hot-desert climate/vegetation when the question specifies EQUATORIAL, even when emboldened (s23 Paper 11 Q4(c), s22 Paper 12 Q3(c)).
Transpiration is not evaporation
Candidates swap the terms for plant water loss. TRANSPIRATION is water loss THROUGH a plant -- vapour from the leaves. EVAPORATION is water becoming vapour from an open surface (soil, a lake). A xerophyte's small, waxy, spine-like leaves cut water loss by reducing TRANSPIRATION; "reduces evaporation" for the leaf adaptation is the wrong process.
Digest (## 2.5): "transpiration" is frequently and incorrectly replaced with "evaporation" for plant water loss/adaptation (w22 Paper 13 Q3(b)(ii)).
Deforestation is not desertification
Two different processes. DEFORESTATION is clearing trees so the land can be used otherwise (ranching, soya, logging) -- a rainforest process. DESERTIFICATION is productive dry-margin land degrading into desert, from BOTH climatic change (drought) AND human overuse (overgrazing, overcultivation, fuelwood) -- the Sahel. It is not simply "cutting trees".
Rainforest soil is thin, not rich
The lush forest misleads candidates into calling the soil fertile. In fact most nutrients are in the living vegetation (biomass), not the soil: heat and rain decompose leaf litter fast and trees reabsorb it quickly, leaving thin, poor soil. That is why deforestation degrades it so fast -- with no canopy or litter, heavy rain leaches nutrient away and erodes the topsoil.
Desert diurnal range needs night too
A testable wrong belief: that a hot desert's large diurnal range is caused only by intense daytime sun. That is only HALF: at night the near-cloudless sky traps no outgoing heat, so the day's heat escapes rapidly and temperatures fall sharply, sometimes near freezing. A full answer needs BOTH intense daytime heating AND rapid night-time heat loss.
Digest (## 2.5): desert diurnal range is often attributed only to daytime sun exposure, missing that heat escapes at night due to lack of cloud cover (w23 Paper 12 Q4(a)(iii)).
Level 3 on the 7-mark case study
For "a named tropical area, causes of deforestation and its impacts": name a real place (the Amazon, Brazil), give specific causes (cattle ranching, soya, logging, road-building) not "farming", cover causes AND impacts, and link each to a consequence.
Describe vs explain
Match the command word. "Describe" a climate = WHAT the pattern is, with figures and units, no causes. "Explain" = WHY it happens (sun, convection, descending air). A describe answered with causes, or an explain as a description, is a flagged error.
Underline the emboldened key word
Underline the emboldened key word -- equatorial vs hot desert, "economic" benefits, the "natural" environment. Missing it sends you down a wrong path (hot deserts when equatorial is named). Answer that exact term; keep every point about the climate or place named.
