Festivals & customs vocabulary, with articles
Cambridge 0520 expects you to describe culture, customs and celebrations. Learn each noun WITH its article, since gender is a named accuracy fault: une fête, un jour férié, une tradition, une coutume, Noël (m), Pâques (f pl). Key verbs: fêter / célébrer, offrir un cadeau, décorer, se réunir en famille, partager un repas, assister à (to attend — a false friend). Faiths vocabulary (une église, une mosquée, le ramadan, l'Aïd) is receptive. Full tables stay in the note.
Mix tenses; compare with comparatives
Culture tasks reward the Range criterion. Use the present for how a festival is usually marked (On offre des cadeaux à Noël), the perfect for one you experienced (nous avons fêté Noël chez mes grands-parents) and the near future for a plan (on va se réunir chez ma tante). Add a comparative or superlative — plus animée que mon anniversaire; la fête la plus importante de l'année — and note the irregular pair meilleur (adjective) vs mieux (adverb).
Drawn from real examiner reports.
Wrong tense on the past/future bullet
A describe-a-celebration task usually pairs a past bullet (last year) with a future bullet (this year). Answering in a different tense from the one signalled caps Task Completion, whatever the content. Risk: Nous fêtons Noël (present) when the bullet asked what you did (needed Nous avons fêté Noël). Underline the tense cue before writing.
Wrong tense caps Task Completion — the most-cited Writing failure, every sitting (s22/w22/s23/w23 Writing).
Reflexive perfect: être + agreement
Family-celebration sentences use reflexive verbs — se réunir (gather), se retrouver (meet up) — a named weak point in the perfect. Two slips: dropping the pronoun (✗ nous avons réuni → nous nous sommes réuni(e)s), and forgetting that reflexives take être, so the participle agrees with the subject (elle s'est retrouvée; ils se sont réunis).
Reflexive perfect a named weak point — se doucher, s'entendre (s23 43 Q3b; w23 22 Q4c).
Agree the adjective with a feminine fête
Even when the noun's gender is obvious, candidates lapse into masculine adjective forms — a scoring-critical accuracy fault. ✗ une fête très important → une fête très importante (fête is feminine, so important takes -e). ✗ une tradition ancien → une tradition ancienne. Fix the noun's gender first, then agree every adjective attached to it.
Adjective left unagreed despite obvious gender (w22 42 Q3a).
Festival nouns: get the gender/article right
Festival and custom nouns carry a fixed gender you must learn with the word: un jour férié, un anniversaire, un cadeau, un repas are masculine; une fête, une tradition, une coutume are feminine; Noël is masculine, Pâques feminine plural. Guessing the article (✗ le fête, ✗ la jour férié) breaks the agreement of everything that follows.
(general FL trap)
meilleur (adj) vs mieux (adv)
Both mean 'better' but are different words: meilleur is an ADJECTIVE (agrees: meilleur / meilleure / meilleurs / meilleures) describing a noun — Le repas est meilleur que d'habitude. mieux is an ADVERB (invariant) describing a verb — On s'entend mieux en famille. Using mieux where an adjective is needed (✗ un repas mieux) is a common slip.
(general FL trap)
fête (noun) vs fêté (participle)
Two words, same circumflex, different jobs: la fête is the noun (a celebration) and je fête is the present tense; fêté is the past participle used after avoir (nous avons fêté Noël). ✗ nous avons fête → nous avons fêté; ✗ une fêté → une fête. Decide the grammatical role — noun/present vs past participle — before choosing the ending -e or -é.
(general FL trap)
assister = to attend, not to assist
A common false friend: assister looks like 'to assist' but means TO ATTEND. assister à = to attend — J'ai assisté à la fête nationale avec ma famille. For 'to help', use aider — J'ai aidé ma mère à décorer la maison. Candidates who confuse them answer a question about attending by describing what they helped prepare instead — a substitution examiners flag by name.
assister (attend) misread as 'assist' — candidates described what they helped do (s23 Speaking Topic 7).
Plan a past, present and future bullet
Tag each bullet with its time-frame marker and pick the tense: l'année dernière → perfect; d'habitude → present; cette année, bientôt → near future. Aim for one past, one present and one future/opinion bullet so the tense range shows.
Add a comparative + varied connectors
To lift the Range mark, reach past parce que/car: use a comparative or superlative (plus animée que, la fête la plus importante) and vary connectors (cependant, de plus, donc). Most candidates rely only on parce que, which caps them mid-band.
Build the full reflexive chain first
For a family-gathering sentence with a reflexive verb (se réunir, se retrouver), write the whole chain first: subject + pronoun + être + a participle agreed with the subject — nous nous sommes réuni(e)s, elle s'est retrouvée. This stops the pronoun or agreement being dropped.
The festivals and customs topic covers how people in French-speaking countries celebrate, and how to compare and describe traditions — a topic that rewards tense range and comparative structures across Reading, Writing and Speaking.
