Four factors, four distinct rewards
The four factors are land (rent), labour (wages), capital (interest) and enterprise (profit). Land = natural resources (soil, minerals, sea); labour = human physical and mental effort; capital = man-made goods that make other goods (machines, tools, factories); enterprise = taking risks and organising the other three. State each factor with its matching reward — muddled pairings score nothing.
Capital means man-made goods, not money
In everyday speech "capital" means money, but in economics capital is a factor of production: the man-made resources used to produce other goods — machinery, vehicles, tools, factories and computers. Money is not a factor of production; it is a medium of exchange used to buy or hire factors. Also distinguish the quantity of capital (how many machines) from its quality (how advanced and productive each machine is) — both affect a country's output.
Factor mobility: occupational + geographical
Factor mobility is how easily a factor moves between uses or locations. For labour, occupational mobility = moving between jobs or industries (raised by education and transferable skills); geographical mobility = moving between locations (raised by transport and affordable housing, cut by family ties). Land is geographically immobile but occupationally mobile (a field can become a car park). Higher mobility helps an economy adjust and cuts structural unemployment.

Quantity of labour ≠ employment
The quantity of labour is the labour force — those of working age willing and able to work, including the unemployed seeking work. So a fall in employment is not a fall in the quantity of labour. Its causes change the supply of workers: birth and death rates, net migration and the retirement age — not whether people have a job.
November 2022 Paper 22 Q5(b): many candidates took "quantity of labour" to mean the level of employment and answered about unemployment rather than the labour force, which includes those seeking work.
Productivity ≠ production
Production is total output. Productivity is output per unit of input, usually output per worker. Adding more land, labour or capital raises production; productivity rises only when each unit produces more. Writing "productivity" for "production" (or the reverse) loses application marks — say which one is changing.
June 2023 Paper 22 key messages and November 2022 Paper 22 general comments both explicitly flag that candidates continue to write productivity when they mean production.
State the cause AND explain the link
On explain and analyse parts, candidates often just name a cause without developing why it changes the factor — that stays at Level 1. Spell out the link: more education raises skills, so each worker produces more, raising productivity. Naming a factor that cannot change that variable (e.g. education raising the SIZE of the labour force) earns nothing.
June 2023 Paper 21 Q3(b): less successful answers stated a cause of labour-force growth without explanation, and some named factors (e.g. better education) that do not change the SIZE of the labour force at all.
Quantity ≠ quality of a factor
The quantity of a factor is how much of it there is (the number of workers or machines). The quality is how productive each unit is (workers' skills and health; the technology in machines). Both raise output, but by different routes: more workers raise capacity, while more skilled workers raise output per worker. Always say which one a change affects.
Occupational vs geographical mobility
Occupational mobility is how easily a factor moves between jobs or uses; geographical mobility is how easily it moves between locations. A worker retraining shows occupational mobility; one relocating to another city shows geographical mobility. Name which type the question means before explaining it.
8-mark discuss: two sides + judgement
The 8-mark (d) part carries the only evaluation (AO3) marks. Develop one side with a chain of reasoning, then the other side, then a supported judgement ("it depends on..."). Avoid simply reversing your first point or listing unexplained points — both stay at Level 1.
Match the command word
Let the command word set the depth: define (2) = precise meaning; explain (4) = meaning plus a developed reason; analyse (6) = a full chain of reasoning; discuss (8) = both sides plus a judgement. A long answer to a 2-mark part wastes time you need for (d).
Use evaluation hooks for factor questions
For factor-of-production evaluation, useful hooks are: the type of industry, the skill level of the workforce, the cost of finance, the time period (short vs long run) and factor mobility. Choosing the hook that fits the context turns a generic judgement into an applied one.
