Freehand drawing -- fast sketching for ideas
Freehand drawing means sketching without a rule, set square or compass. Its purpose is communicating ideas, especially early, where speed matters more than measured accuracy: read a brief or data table and convert it into a visual proposal. Good freehand is confident and controlled -- single flowing lines, crating to keep proportion, and notes explaining what the sketch cannot show. Fitness for purpose: freehand for thinking, CAD or instruments for accurate working drawings.
The four presentation techniques
Presentation (rendering) turns a plain outline into something solid. Four techniques combine. Thick and thin line: thick outer silhouette, thin internal detail, so it stands off the page. Light and shade: one light source, faces near it lightest, those away darker -- graded tone gives the 3D effect. Texture: wood grain and knots, stipple for matt, highlights for gloss. Colour: the material colour with tone built in so it reads as form, not a flat fill.
Choosing the most relevant graphic
This topic is judgement: which graphic best carries THIS information. A rendered pictorial shows the look of a product idea. For data the chart must fit the message: a pie chart shows proportions of a whole, a bar chart compares separate quantities. A line graph shows a trend over time, a flow chart a sequence. Choosing wrongly loses the marks even if the drawing is neat, so read what the data IS (proportion, comparison, trend, form) and pick the method that fits.

Colour but no wood grain
Asked to render a specific material, candidates often add colour and stop -- colour alone is not enough. Softwood needs grain lines along the length, the odd knot, and the end grain at any cut end (different from the face). Layer the rendering: base colour, then tone for form, then the texture unique to it. Get orientation right -- grain runs along the board.

Uniform line weight looks flat
The thick/thin convention is often applied incompletely. If every edge is the same thin weight the drawing looks flat -- the eye cannot separate object from detail. Make the outer silhouette a thick line and keep internal edges thin; this alone lifts the form off the page. Before lining in, decide which edges form the silhouette and apply it throughout.

Bar chart when a pie was asked
Asked for a pie chart (each category a proportion of the whole), a significant number of candidates draw a bar chart and score nothing, because a bar chart answers a different question -- comparing separate quantities, not showing a share of a total. Read the command: if it names a chart type, use that type. Neatness cannot rescue the wrong graphic.

Pie sector angles do not add up
Even with the right chart, candidates get the sector angles wrong. A pie chart's sectors together make a full circle (360 degrees), so every share of the total must be converted and the angles must sum to 360. Work each sector as its fraction of the whole times 360 degrees, then check the total. Fixing one sector by eye and guessing the rest is the usual slip.

Acrylic drawn as a flat fill
Clear acrylic rendered as a solid flat colour rarely convinces. Show transparent materials very light, with strong highlight streaks, reflections and see-through edges, not a uniform fill. The highlights and transparency, not the colour, are what read as clear plastic. Build tone and highlights over a very pale base rather than colouring the shape solid.

Shading with no single light source
Tone only reads as solid form if it comes from ONE consistent light source. Shading faces at random, or lighting them from several directions, gives a muddled surface that does not describe a solid. Fix the light direction first, keep the faces nearest it lightest and those turned away darker -- a light, a mid and a dark face -- and add a cast shadow to sit the object down.
Colour alone names the material
A testable error: thinking colour alone identifies a material. It is not -- brown could be an eraser or a plank. What names a material is colour + tone + texture: for softwood grain, knots and end grain; for metal a graded tone with highlights; for acrylic highlights and see-through edges. If you cannot name the material with the colour removed, it is not finished.
Read the command, pick the graphic
First read what is asked -- a rendered pictorial, a named chart, a diagram -- and match it to the data: proportion of a whole means a pie, comparison of amounts a bar, a trend a line. If the command names a chart type, use that type; a neat but wrong graphic scores nothing.
Render in layers
Set a single light source, then build up: lay the base material colour, add light and shade (lightest toward the light, darker turning away), then the texture -- grain and end grain for wood, highlights for gloss, stipple for matt. Finish with a cast shadow.
Thick outline, accurate charts
Use a thick outer silhouette against thin detail to lift the object off the page. For a data graphic, choose the correct type first, then construct it accurately -- a pie chart's sectors must sum to 360 degrees. A neat but wrong chart does not score.
