Orthographic projection -- multi-view drawing
Orthographic projection is the workshop's working-drawing language: an object is shown as several flat views, each looking straight at a face at 90 degrees. The principal views are the front elevation (most detail), the plan (from above) and the end elevation (from one side). Each is drawn to scale and projected in line, so every face is true shape and size. Two layouts exist -- first-angle and third-angle -- so every drawing states which it uses.
First-angle vs third-angle placement
The two systems differ in view placement. First-angle projects each view onto the plane beyond the object: the plan sits below the front elevation and the view-from-left ends up on the right (opposite the way you looked). Third-angle projects onto the near plane: plan above, left-hand view on the left. Tell them apart by the projection symbol -- a trapezoid beside two concentric circles: circles right = first-angle, circles left = third-angle.
Project between views -- 45 degree mitre line
Accurate orthographic drawing means projecting, not estimating. Widths carry vertically between the front elevation and the plan; heights horizontally to the end elevation. The depth, shared by plan and end view, needs a 45-degree mitre line: run it from the plan across, through the mitre and into the end view so the depths match. Draw the front elevation first, project the rest, and finish every view -- an incomplete plan loses marks.

Guessing sizes instead of projecting
The most-repeated orthographic fault is estimating a view by eye instead of projecting from the others. Symptoms: the end-view depth over-projected because not carried from the plan, and the plan left incomplete. Project widths to the plan, heights to the end view, and use a 45-degree mitre line so depths agree. Marks reward projection and completed views.

End view projected to the wrong side
The first/third-angle distinction shows up as a side view on the wrong side of the front elevation. The rule: first-angle puts the view-from-left on the right and the plan below; third-angle puts it on the left, plan above. Read the projection symbol first -- circles right = first-angle, circles left = third-angle. Misreading the system mirrors the part.

Line conventions omitted or wrong
An orthographic drawing communicates through its line conventions, which examiners often find absent or wrong: thick continuous for outlines, thin dashed for hidden detail, thin chain for centre lines, thin continuous for projection lines. Candidates lose easy marks by drawing everything as a plain outline. Match each line type to its meaning.

Plan always placed below the front view
A fixed wrong rule: that the plan always sits below the front elevation. That is only true in first-angle. In third-angle the plan is drawn above, because the horizontal viewing plane folds up not down. The plan's position is itself a clue: plan below = first-angle, plan above = third-angle. Always dropping the plan underneath draws a third-angle layout wrongly.
Mixing first- and third-angle placement
Mixing the two systems on one drawing -- some views placed first-angle and others third-angle -- makes the layout impossible to read consistently and mirrors part of the object. Choose one system for the whole drawing, mark it with the projection symbol, and place every view by that system's rule. When reading a drawing, identify the system from the symbol first.
Omitting the projection symbol
Leaving the projection symbol off removes the one thing that tells the reader whether it is first- or third-angle. Because the two systems place views on opposite sides, an unlabelled drawing can be read as the wrong system and made as a mirror image. Always draw the symbol -- a trapezoid beside two concentric circles, circles right for first-angle, left for third-angle.
Third-angle drawn on the far side
Getting the two systems back to front. First-angle projects each view onto the plane beyond it, so the left-view lands on the right and the plan below. Third-angle is the opposite -- the plane sits between viewer and object, so each view is on the near side (left-view on the left, plan above). Symbol: circles left = third-angle, circles right = first-angle.
Read the projection symbol first
Before drawing or reading anything, identify the system from the projection symbol: circles right of the trapezoid means first-angle, circles left means third-angle. That fixes where the plan and end views belong, so you place or interpret every view consistently.
Project, don't guess
Draw the front elevation first at the stated scale, then project the plan and end elevation from it in line. Use a 45-degree mitre line so the plan and end-view depths match rather than estimating. Complete every view -- an unfinished plan loses marks.
Line conventions and the command word
Apply the line conventions -- thick outline, dashed hidden detail, chain centre line -- as marks are reserved for them. Match the command word: identify or state wants the system named, complete or draw wants a projected view. Do not answer with a drawing when a name is asked.
