Circuit diagrams -- symbols and conventions
A circuit diagram shows how components connect using standard British Standard symbols. Recognise and draw the common ones: cell, lamp, resistor, switch, LED, diode, buzzer, motor, LDR and capacitor. Conventions also carry marks: conventional current flows from the positive (+) terminal round the external circuit to the negative (-); a junction dot means joined, no dot means not joined; and a diode or LED must face the right way or it will not conduct.
Units and prefixes -- x1000 per step
Each electrical quantity has an SI unit and a ladder of prefixes. Current is in amperes (A); voltage in volts (V); resistance in ohms (kilohm, megohm); capacitance in farads (F), but a farad is huge so capacitors use microfarad (uF), nanofarad (nF) and picofarad (pF). The ladder is pico, nano, micro, milli, unit, kilo, mega, each step x1000: 4700 ohm = 4.7 kilohm, 0.047 uF = 47 nF. Give the unit AND its prefix.
Switches -- match action to application
A switch makes or breaks a circuit, and each type has an action matched to a job. A toggle latches: flip it and it stays on or off (mains switch). A push-to-make (PTM) is normally open, conducting only while pressed (a doorbell). A push-to-break (PTB) is normally closed, breaking only while pressed. A micro switch trips on a tiny movement, sensing a position or limit. A reed switch's ferromagnetic reeds close when a magnet is near, no contact (an alarm sensor).

Muddling prefixes or dropping the unit
Examiners flag confusion over size prefixes, especially for capacitance (pF, nF, uF) where the micro symbol is often unrecognised, and reading a time axis in milliseconds. The fixed ladder is pico, nano, micro, milli, unit, kilo, mega, so 1000 pF = 1 nF and 1000 ohm = 1 kilohm. Two slips lose marks: converting the wrong way, and a bare number with no unit.

Series vs parallel when a lamp fails
In a series circuit there is one path: current is the same everywhere and voltage is shared, so one break stops everything. In a parallel circuit each branch gets the full supply voltage and the branch currents add, so if one lamp fails the others stay lit. Candidates often reverse this; decide how many paths there are first.

Vague switch names and action words
Switch questions are marked on precise vocabulary. A toggle is credited for locking or latching in position, not just turning something on. A PTM makes contact only while pressed (a doorbell); a PTB breaks only while pressed. Abbreviations must be exact, e.g. SPDT. Writing only that a switch turns on and off, without naming the type and its action, misses the marks.

Conductor vs insulator reversed
A reversed definition: thinking a good conductor has high resistance. It is the opposite. A conductor (copper, aluminium, carbon) has low resistance and lets current flow; an insulator (PVC, rubber, glass) has very high resistance and blocks current. That is why a cable's cores are copper and its sheath is PVC. Anchor each term to an example before answering.
Junction dot means wires are joined
On a circuit diagram, crossing wires are connected only if there is a junction dot. A dot means the wires are joined; no dot means they cross over and are NOT connected. Misreading this changes the whole circuit -- a missing or extra dot turns a real join into an unconnected crossing or the reverse. Add a dot only where you intend a join, and read each path by its dots.
Diode or LED drawn the wrong way round
A diode and an LED conduct in one direction only, so the symbol must face the right way -- the triangle points the way conventional current flows, into the bar. Drawn reversed, it blocks the current, the circuit fails and the orientation mark is lost. Check the supply polarity (+ to -) and point the triangle so current can flow through it in normal use.
PTM stays on like a toggle
A sharp wrong belief: that a push-to-make (PTM) button switches something on and stays on, like a toggle. It does not. A PTM is momentary and normally open -- it conducts only while held down and springs open the moment you release it. The switch that latches and stays put is the toggle. Ask whether the switch must hold its state (toggle) or act only while pressed (PTM/PTB).
Numeric answers -- show working, state unit
In a numeric answer, show working and state the unit with its prefix (e.g. 4.7 kilohm): method marks are given at each stage and a bare number is often not credited. When converting, check direction -- smaller prefix to larger, divide by 1000 per step; the other way, multiply.
Switch: name type, action, application
On a switch-selection question, name the exact type and justify it by its action matched to the job: a doorbell a momentary PTM, a window alarm a reed switch (magnet, no contact), a guard a micro switch. Name plus action plus application wins full marks.
Read and draw the diagram by its conventions
When reading or drawing a circuit, apply the conventions: conventional current flows + to -; a junction dot is a join, a plain crossing is not; a diode or LED must face the right way to conduct. Orientation and dots are where routine marks are won or lost.
