Standard market (stock) forms
Materials come in standard market (stock) forms; choose one near the finished shape to cut waste. Metals: sheet/plate, bar (round, square, flat, hexagonal), rod, tube, angle, channel. Plastics: sheet, rod, tube, film, granules. Woods: sawn or planed (PAR/PSE) stock, boards, dowel. Timber's nominal (sawn) size exceeds its actual (planed) size. Name the form exactly — "round tube", "angle" score; "metal" does not.
Right cutting tool for material and cut
Cutting to size needs the right tool for the material and the cut. Hacksaw — cuts metal and rigid plastic. Tenon saw — straight cuts and joints in wood. Cross-cut saw — across the grain (rip saw cuts along it). Panel saw — boards/sheet timber. Guillotine — shears sheet. Power tools: a jigsaw for curves; a circular saw for straight cuts. The tool is part of the answer, not just "a saw".
Datum: the one true reference
Accurate marking out needs a datum: a reference you trust. A datum face is a flat reference face, a datum edge a straight edge square to it, a datum line one drawn from that edge. In wood you plane a face side flat, then a face edge square to it (try square); in metal you file an edge flat and square. The point: every measurement comes off the same reference, so errors do not add up (cumulative error).

Market-form names must be exact
Standard market-form names must be exact — examiners accept "round tube" and "angle" but reject near-miss variants, so "tube bar" or a plain "metal" earns nothing where a precise stock-form name is required. Learn the set: sheet, plate, bar (round, square, flat, hexagonal), rod, tube, angle, channel. An angle is already an L-section, needing no bending.

Name the exact tool or file
When a question asks you to name the cutting or shaping tool, only the exact name scores. Examiners reject vague words — name the file or saw precisely (half-round file, rat-tail file, hand file, hacksaw, tenon saw, coping saw); "curved", "rounded" or "a cutting tool" gain nothing. Match the tool: a hacksaw for a steel bar, a tenon saw for a wood joint.

Datum face is a reference, not just flat
The term datum face is repeatedly poorly answered. It is not just "a flat side": it is a prepared true flat reference face from which all measurement is taken, so errors do not accumulate. Plane (wood) or file (metal) a face flat and true, mark it, then measure everything from it. One reference stops cumulative error.

Kerf: leave a waste allowance
When a question asks WHY you leave about 5 mm of waste beyond the marked line, the answer is the kerf — the width of material the saw blade removes as it cuts. Cut on the waste side so the kerf is lost from the waste, not the finished piece; then file or plane back to the line. "To prevent mistakes" or "in case it slips" does not score.

Don't default to "laser cutter"
A standing key message: candidates over-rely on the laser cutter, defaulting to it for almost any cutting task — including jobs it cannot do. Most cutting in Resistant Materials uses hand and portable power tools, not CNC. Read what the task needs (a hacksaw for steel, a tenon saw for a wood joint) and name that.

Enclosed cut needs a pilot hole
To cut an internal or enclosed shape (a hole in the middle of a panel), first drill a hole so a saw blade can be threaded through, then cut with a piercing / coping / scroll saw. Many named a saw with no pilot hole, or a band saw — which cannot make an enclosed cut, as its blade is a continuous loop. State the pilot hole and a saw whose blade can be re-fitted.

Every size comes off one datum
A testable wrong belief: that it does not matter which edge you measure from, or that measuring each size from the end of the last is fine. Not so — every small error is added to the next, building into a large one (cumulative error). A datum avoids this: take every measurement from that one reference, not a rough end or the previous mark.
"Other than PPE" = process-specific
Questions often say "other than PPE", yet "wear safety glasses" scores nothing. Give precautions tied to the process: secure the work in a vice or clamp, check the guard is in position, know the emergency stop, remove the chuck key first.
Match the command word
Watch the command word. Name / state wants the precise tool or form only. Describe wants the sequence (secure, mark, cut on the waste side, finish to the line). Explain wants why — why cut on the waste side, why work from a datum.
Read the marks and be specific
Two habits. Read the mark allocation — a 3-mark answer needs three distinct points, not one repeated. And be specific: name the exact tool, form or size, never "a saw". Section-3 marks reward precise, purpose-matched detail, so match every tool to the task.
