Hardwood vs softwood: a botanical split
Timber is classed as a HARDWOOD or a SOFTWOOD — a BOTANICAL split, not a hardness rating. Hardwoods come from broad-leaved (deciduous) trees (oak, beech, balsa): slower-growing, denser, durable, dearer, close-grained, suiting quality furniture. Softwoods come from coniferous trees (pine, spruce): faster-growing, cheaper, lighter, easier to work but knottier, suiting construction. The catch: balsa is a HARDWOOD though very soft; yew a softwood though hard.
Seasoning: air vs kiln
Freshly felled (green) timber is full of water and would warp, split, shrink or rot. SEASONING reduces its moisture to about 10-18 percent, making it STABLE, stronger, lighter, rot-resistant and able to take glue and finishes. AIR seasoning stacks boards on spacer sticks under cover, so moisture evaporates slowly — cheap but slow. KILN seasoning uses a heated, humidity-controlled chamber — faster, lower moisture, and the heat kills insects and spores, but costs more.
Manufactured boards vs solid wood
A manufactured board is built from veneers, strips, chips or fibres bonded with ADHESIVE, unlike solid wood cut from a tree. The five are plywood, blockboard, chipboard, hardboard and MDF. Plywood is odd-numbered veneers with grain crossed at right angles, so strong and stable every way; MDF is fine fibres and resin, smooth and grain-free. Boards beat solid wood: large flat sheets, dimensionally STABLE, cheaper; drawbacks are edges needing lipping and weak edge screw-holding.

"Close-grained" not known (beech)
Asked WHY beech suits a turned or steam-bent part, most candidates cannot give the property: beech is CLOSE-GRAINED — a tight, even, dense grain with no large open pores — so it turns cleanly on a lathe and bends without splintering. Weaker answers say only that it is strong or cheap. Learn the property word and link it: close-grained → clean turning and a smooth finish.

End grain vs short grain confused
Two grain terms are weakly known. END GRAIN is the surface exposed when you cut ACROSS the fibres, at the end of a board — more absorbent and harder to finish. SHORT GRAIN is where the grain runs the wrong way across a narrow section, leaving it weak and liable to SNAP. So end grain is a cut face; short grain is a weakness in a thin part.

Plywood advantages under-known
Plywood's properties are often under-stated. It is generally CHEAPER than solid wood for large panels and more DIMENSIONALLY STABLE — its veneers are glued with grain crossed at right angles, so it resists the warping and splitting solid timber suffers. Its drawbacks are edges needing lipping and harder working. State the genuine advantage, not a guess.

MDF wrongly called lightweight
Because MDF is cheap and cuts easily, candidates assume it is LIGHT — but it is a densely compressed fibre board, usually as heavy as or heavier than solid softwood the same size. Its selling points are smooth grain-free faces, low price and taking paint well; weaknesses are weight, water absorption, and fine dust. Never offer "lightness" as an MDF advantage.

Slotted holes = wood movement
Solid wood keeps MOVING after manufacture — expanding in damp, shrinking in dry, mostly across the grain. When a solid-wood top is fixed to a frame, the screws sit in SLOTTED holes so it can slide as it moves. Most candidates give the wrong reason — that slots ease fitting. Really: fixed tight through round holes, the movement builds stress and the wood CRACKS.

Contact adhesive needs no clamping
For a laminate or large sheet, the right glue is a CONTACT adhesive: spread on BOTH faces, left until touch-dry (tacky), then bonded over the whole area with NO clamping. Candidates lose the mark by adding a clamping stage — a clamp cannot reach the middle of a large sheet. Contrast PVA and resin joints, which DO need clamping while they cure.

"Hardwood" does not mean hard
The words hardwood and softwood do NOT describe how hard the wood is — the classification is BOTANICAL. A hardwood comes from a broad-leaved (deciduous) tree, a softwood from a coniferous tree, whatever the real hardness. Balsa is a HARDWOOD yet one of the softest, lightest woods, while yew is a softwood yet quite hard. Classify by tree type, not by hardness.
Name a specific timber, give the property
Name a SPECIFIC timber or board and justify it with a PROPERTY — never just "wood". Not "made from wood" but "beech is close-grained, so it turns cleanly": that property→use link is the AO2 mark. COMPARE or EVALUATE wants both sides and a judgement.
Command word sets the depth
Read the command word. DESCRIBE wants WHAT — a property, or a process's STEPS in order. EXPLAIN wants WHY — e.g. why crossed veneers make plywood stable. EVALUATE or COMPARE wants both sides and a judgement. Describing where evaluation was asked caps the mark.
Give every stage of a process
Process questions are marked stage by stage. Steam bending: soften with steam, bend around a FORMER, then hold until it cools and sets — omitting the former or the "hold until set" loses marks. Don't confuse it with lamination.
