Purpose of a finish, and prepare first
A finish is applied to protect the material (stop steel rusting, stop wood rotting or taking up moisture, resist wear, staining or heat), to improve appearance (colour, sheen, bring out the grain), or to improve function (a hygienic wipe-clean surface, grip). Name the purpose for the product, not just "to look nice". But a finish only holds on a prepared surface: on wood, glasspaper along the grain and remove dust; on metal, remove rust and scale then degrease.
Matching finish to material and job
Name a specific finish and say what it does. Oils (teak, tung, linseed) soak into wood, feed and water-repel it and enhance grain -- food-safe oils or beeswax suit items that touch food. Stains only add colour and give almost no protection, so they need a topcoat. Varnish or lacquer forms a hard protective film. Paint is a system: primer (seals, keys, inhibits rust), undercoat (builds film), topcoat (colour and weather skin). Dip-coating gives metal a polyethylene skin.
Protecting metal: plating, anodising, self-finishing
Ferrous metals rust, so outdoor steel is protected by a paint system, dip-coating, galvanising (a zinc coat), electroplating or, for aluminium, anodising. Electroplating deposits a thin layer of a different metal (chrome, nickel, zinc, tin) onto the object, the cathode. Anodising, for aluminium only, thickens the metal's own oxide (the object is the anode), giving a harder, corrosion-resistant surface which can be dyed. Self-finishing materials need no applied finish.

Glasspaper along the grain, use a cork rubber
"Sand it" loses the technique marks. Glasspaper must be worked along the grain, not across it -- across drags the fibres and leaves scratches visible under a clear finish. Work through progressively finer grades, and wrap the paper round a cork rubber (sanding block) so it presses evenly. Name the along-the-grain direction, the finer sequence and the cork rubber.

Acrylic mirror finish: wet-and-dry then buff
For a mirror edge on acrylic, filing and draw-filing come first to remove saw marks, then the surface is rubbed with wet-and-dry (silicon-carbide) paper used wet through finer grades, and finally buffed with a polishing mop and compound. Jumping straight to a mop, or stopping at filing, misses the wet-and-dry and buffing stages that produce the mirror finish.

Dip-coating: heat the metal, fluidised powder
Dip-coating is poorly described. The stages: clean and heat the metal in an oven (around 180 C) so powder melts on it; dip it into a fluidised bed -- polyethylene powder kept floating by air blown up through it; the hot metal melts the powder onto it; return it briefly to the oven to flow smooth; then cool. Common gaps: forgetting the pre-heat, or thinking the part is sprayed.

"Other than PPE" needs process safety
When a question says other than PPE, writing wear goggles or gloves scores zero -- those are excluded. Give process-specific precautions: work in a well-ventilated area because paint and solvent fumes are harmful; keep solvent finishes away from naked flames because they are flammable; dispose of solvent-soaked rags safely. Answer about the process, not what you wear.

A stain colours but does not protect
A common wrong belief is that staining wood both colours and protects it. A stain soaks in to change the colour while letting the grain show, but it forms no protective film and barely resists moisture or wear, so stained wood still absorbs water and marks easily. To protect it, apply a clear topcoat over the stain -- varnish, lacquer or oil. Stain colours, topcoat protects.
Primer, undercoat, topcoat each do a job
Candidates muddle the three layers of a paint system or skip one. The primer goes on first -- it seals and keys to the bare surface and, on metal, inhibits rust. The undercoat builds the film and evens the base for the colour. The topcoat gives the colour, sheen and the weather- and wear-resistant outer skin. Missing the primer is why paint flakes or rust creeps through.
Anodising is not electroplating
A confusion: that anodising equals electroplating, or that anodising coats aluminium with another metal. It does not. Anodising passes a current through aluminium to thicken its own oxide -- no new metal is added; the harder, porous oxide resists corrosion and can be dyed, and the object is the anode. Electroplating adds a different metal, and there the object is the cathode.
Match the depth to the command word
State or name wants the finish only. Describe wants the stages (prepare, prime, undercoat, topcoat; or heat, dip, re-flow, cool). Explain wants why the finish suits the material and use. Evaluate weighs one finish against another -- a strength and a drawback of each.
Link the finish to material and use
Marks beyond recall come from justifying the choice. Say why an oil not a lacquer for a chopping board (food-safe), why galvanising for an outdoor steel gate (ferrous, gets wet), why anodising for aluminium (self-colours, resists corrosion). Connect the finish to the use.
Name a specific finish, not "varnish it"
A generic finish caps low the same way a generic material name does. Name a specific finish and its context -- teak oil, cellulose paint, exterior polyurethane varnish, polyethylene dip-coating, zinc galvanising -- not "put a finish on it" or "varnish it".
