Construction forms, jigs and component sizes
A carcase construction is a box or shell from wide boards jointed at the corners; a stool or frame construction is rails and legs. A cramp holds glued parts while the adhesive sets; a former shapes a bent or laminated part; a jig holds the work and guides the tool (a drilling jig repeats a hole). KD fittings join manufactured boards for flat-pack. Specify sizes: a screw by gauge x length plus head type, a bolt by thread diameter (e.g. M6) x length, a nail by length.
Permanent vs temporary joints
The first joining decision is permanent or temporary, because it sets the method. A permanent joint cannot be undone without damaging the parts: welding, brazing, soldering, riveting, adhesives and nails. A temporary joint undoes without damage: screws, nuts and bolts, KD (knock-down) fittings, hinges and catches. Choose permanent where strength and a sealed joint matter; choose temporary where access or self-assembly is needed.
Soldering vs brazing vs welding
Three thermal ways to join metal, by temperature. Soft soldering draws a low-melting tin-based solder into a fluxed, heated joint by capillary action -- weakest, for electrical joints and light sheet. Brazing uses a brass/spelter filler melting hotter than solder but below the parent metal -- strong, for steel frames. Welding is strongest: the parent metals melt and fuse into one piece. Rule: in soldering and brazing only the filler melts; in welding the parent metal melts.

"More glue" will not fix a butt joint
A plain butt joint (two glued square edges) is weak -- small gluing area, no mechanical interlock. To strengthen it, name a specific fix: a corner block, a KD block fitting, dowels across the joint, or pins/screws and glue. Each adds gluing area and a mechanical link so the joint resists twisting. "More glue" does not address the weakness and scores nothing.

Name the RIGHT hinge, not just "a hinge"
Hinge questions want the correct named hinge, not a default butt hinge. A butt or back-flap hinge suits a small door, flap or stand; a tee (T) hinge suits a wide, heavy gate whose strap spreads the load; a piano (continuous) hinge runs a lid's full length so a long edge won't sag. Writing "butt hinge" where a tee or piano is needed loses the mark -- name it and give the reason.

Dowel joint: say WHY, not just "stronger"
Asked why a dowel joint beats a plain butt joint, candidates often only repeat that it is stronger. Give the reason: the dowels add a larger gluing area and a greater cross-section across the joint, and they stop it twisting, so it resists pulling apart. Naming the mechanism -- more glue area, greater diameter, less twisting -- earns the mark, not the conclusion.

Contact adhesive is not clamped
Contact adhesive is described wrongly when candidates try to clamp it. It is spread on both faces, left until touch-dry (tacky), then the surfaces are pressed together and bond on contact -- so it needs no clamping and must be positioned right first time, because it grabs immediately. Clamping while it dries describes PVA or resin wood glue, not contact adhesive.

Temporary does not mean weak
Temporary vs permanent describes whether a joint can be undone without damage, not how strong it is. A nut and bolt is temporary yet can make a very strong, load-bearing joint -- it is temporary because it can be unbolted. A KD fitting holds a flat-pack cabinet firmly yet lets it be dismantled. Choose by product need, not by assuming permanent = strong.
Rivet vs pop (blind) rivet
Both are permanent joints in sheet metal, but they differ by access. An ordinary rivet needs both sides -- the far tail is hammered over to form a head. A pop (blind) rivet is set from one side only with a rivet gun: the mandrel pulls up a head on the far side and snaps off, needing no rear access. An ordinary rivet where only one side is reachable loses the mark.
Welding fuses the parent metal, not a filler
A trap: thinking welding is a hotter soldering where a filler melts and glues two unchanged parts. In soldering and brazing the parent metal is NOT melted -- only a lower-melting filler (tin solder or brass spelter) melts and holds the parts. In welding the parent metals themselves melt and fuse into one piece. That is why a weld is strongest: no join line of a weaker metal.
Answer the command word
Describe wants what you do and the sequence (clean, flux, heat, apply solder). Explain wants why (why flux is used, why a pilot hole is drilled). Evaluate wants a weighed judgement with both sides -- permanent vs temporary, strength vs access.
Match the method to the job and justify
Naming a component is only half the mark -- link it to the material and whether the joint is permanent or temporary. A flat-pack cabinet uses KD fittings so it can be dismantled; a load-bearing steel frame is welded because it is permanent. Give the reason it suits the product.
Name the exact component or method
Vague answers cap low. Write the exact component -- piano hinge, countersunk No. 8 screw, pop rivet, corner block, KD cam fitting, contact adhesive -- not "a hinge", "a screw" or "glue it". Variants and generic terms are rejected, so name the specific part the question tests.
