Realisation: complexity, skill, precision, function
Realisation is the making stage, and the mark reflects four things: the complexity attempted, the skill and precision of the work, and how well the finished product functions. A simple product made tidily cannot reach the top band; an ambitious one made carelessly loses precision and function. Attempt genuine making challenges — accurate joints, shaped parts, a working mechanism or circuit — and carry them out accurately.
Manipulate materials and use CAM well
Manipulating materials sensitively means the correct process for each material — vacuum forming or line bending acrylic, sawing and planing timber along the grain, filing and finishing metal — not one method for everything. Using technologies successfully means that where computer-aided manufacture (CAM, driven by CAD) is used, it suits the task and is set up and run correctly. Do not use CAM unless it adds the accuracy or repeatability the task needs.
Photograph the stages and finished product
Realisation is moderated from the folder, not the object in the room, so the making must be evidenced. Include clear photographs of the key making stages and the finished product, ideally annotated to show the skills used. Where CAM is used, add CAD screenshots and the machine set-up and settings. Folders with little or no photographic evidence cannot be credited — the marks depend on being able to SEE the complexity, skill, precision and function.

No photo evidence, no realisation marks
A recurring, avoidable loss: a genuinely good product but little or no photographic evidence of the process or finished item. Realisation is judged from the submitted evidence, so a moderator who cannot see the making cannot award the marks. Photograph as you go: the marking-out, key stages, tricky joints, any CAM, and several views of the finished product.

Neat but simple caps the mark
A neat product does not automatically earn a high mark. The mark reflects complexity, skill, precision and function. A simple product any beginner could make quickly, even if tidy, shows little demanding skill and is capped below the top band. Build in genuine challenges — accurate joints, shaped parts, a mechanism — and execute them accurately.

Quality control ≠ quality assurance
Quality control (QC) is checking the work against the specification and its tolerances as you make, correcting anything outside the limits. Quality assurance (QA) is broader and earlier — the system of standards set up to prevent faults. In a project you mainly show QC: working to a tolerance (plus or minus 1 mm) and checking each part. Measuring is control, not assurance.

CAM with no CAD or settings shown
Using CAM is only credited as successful if you show you drove it. A folder that says 'I laser-cut the parts' but includes no CAD file, screenshots or machine settings evidences nothing — it could be a pressed button on someone else's file. Include the CAD drawing, and describe the material, speed, power and layout you set. Successful technology use is evidenced, not asserted.

One method forced on every material
Manipulating materials sensitively means the right process for each material. Candidates lose skill marks by forcing every part through one method — cutting everything on the laser cutter, or treating metal like plastic. Match process to material: line bend or vacuum form acrylic, saw and plane timber, file and finish metal. One method for everything shows less skill.

Evidence reconstructed at the end
Even when a folder has photos, gathering them only at the end is a fault. Evidence reconstructed after making is usually thin and misses the very steps that showed skill — the tricky joint, the forming, the machine set-up. Photograph stage by stage as the making happens, so the skill and precision are visible, not just the final object.

Made it, so photos are optional
A common, costly belief: 'I made the real product, so I do not need photos of it.' Realisation is moderated from the folder of evidence, not the object, which the moderator never sees. Without photographs of the stages and finished product, the examiner cannot see the complexity, skill, precision and function, so those marks cannot be awarded.
Five moves for top-band realisation
Attempt genuine complexity, work with precision (check parts against the specification and tolerances as you go), manipulate each material sensitively, finish well, and photograph everything — with CAD screenshots and settings for any CAM. Marks reward what can be SEEN.
Evidence CAM with CAD and settings
When you use CAM, evidence it: include the CAD screenshots, say why the task suits CAM (identical parts needing accuracy and repeatability), and record the machine set-up and settings — material, speed, power, layout. Unevidenced CAM is not credited.
Check against tolerance as you make
Show quality control by working to tolerance. A size of 300 mm with tolerance plus or minus 2 mm is acceptable only between 298 and 302 mm; measure each part and remake anything outside the limits before it is built in. Recording these checks evidences precision.
