Wide range of conceptually different ideas
Open the problem up with a wide, imaginative range of solutions. The word that matters is DIFFERENT — the ideas should be conceptually different ways of solving the problem, not the same idea in three colours or sizes. For a portable seat, a real range might be a folding stool, an inflatable cushion and a fold-flat crate seat. Producing near-identical variations, or fewer than three ideas, loses marks. Aim for quantity and variety first, then choose one to develop.
Annotate every idea — sketches AND notes
A design idea is a sketch PLUS annotations — short notes that ADD information the drawing cannot show: the materials used, how parts are joined or constructed, key sizes, and above all how the idea meets the specification. Where a task says "sketches and notes", sketches alone cannot reach full marks, and notes that restate the obvious ("this is a chair") add nothing. Strong annotation reads as a running commentary against the brief.
Explore technical aspects, evaluate each
Exploring ideas is more than drawing them. Explore each idea's TECHNICAL aspects — the materials it would use and the constructions (joints, fixings) that hold it together — which exposes ideas that look good but would be hard to make. Then EVALUATE each idea against EACH specification point in turn, weighing strengths and weaknesses. Point-by-point checking turns selection into a justified decision and shows which idea best meets the whole brief.

Too few or near-identical ideas
The most-cited ideas-stage weakness is a narrow range: fewer than three ideas, or three essentially the same. A narrow theme for inspiration produces near-identical work. The stage rewards a wide exploration of DIFFERENT solutions — colour and size variants of one concept are not different ideas. If two ideas fit the same sentence, they are the same idea twice.

Sketches with no informative notes
A second fault is treating the ideas page as a drawing exercise. Candidates draw neat sketches but leave them un-annotated, or write notes that restate the obvious — labelling a chair "chair". The scheme credits notes that ADD information, so empty labels and bare sketches gain nothing. Good notes give the material and how it meets a spec point.

Describing ideas, not evaluating
When asked to select or evaluate, candidates DESCRIBE their ideas ("this one has four legs") instead of EVALUATING them — weighing each against the requirements, with strengths AND weaknesses, to reach a justified choice. Describing is not evaluating. The remedy: hold every idea against EACH specification point, producing judgement not description.

Idea meets only part of the brief
Candidates propose ideas that satisfy only PART of the brief — a container that is actually an enclosed game, or a rack for many bikes when one upright bike was specified. Such ideas are CAPPED because they do not meet ALL the stated requirements, however well drawn. Check each idea against every requirement; one that misses a point should not be carried forward.

Misreading the brief or a key term
Some candidates design the wrong thing because they misread the brief or a key word — for example misreading "terrain" or "dispensing" and answering a different problem. However good the sketches, an idea that solves the wrong problem cannot gain the marks. Read the brief and every key term carefully, and check each idea answers what was asked before developing it.

Same evaluation for every idea
When selecting, candidates repeat the SAME evaluation for all their ideas — "it would work well" against each — instead of giving each idea its own justified judgement. Repeating one evaluation loses marks as it does not distinguish them. Each idea needs a distinct judgement against the specification, its strengths and weaknesses, so the choice is genuinely reasoned.

Neat, polished variants count as a range
A specific wrong belief: that a good ideas page is judged on how NEAT the drawings are, and that several tidy versions of one favourite count as a "wide range". Examiners reward conceptually DIFFERENT solutions and informative annotation, not drawing polish or cosmetic variety. Colour and size variants of one concept are still ONE idea, however neat.

Show three or more different ideas
Show a wide range — at least three ideas that are conceptually DIFFERENT, not variants of one. This breadth of concept is what the ideas stage rewards, and it gives a real spread of options to evaluate against the specification before choosing one.
Annotate against each spec point
Annotate every idea with notes that ADD information — the material and why, how it is constructed, key features, and how it meets specification points. Never leave a sketch bare or label the obvious. Writing notes against the spec shows, idea by idea, how each requirement is met.
Explore materials and construction
For each idea, say what it would be MADE from and how it would be JOINED or constructed, so a maker could see it is buildable. Exploring the technical aspects early exposes ideas that look good on paper but would be hard or impossible to make.
Evaluate point by point to justify a choice
Evaluate each idea against EACH specification point, weighing strengths and weaknesses, then justify your choice. After sketching, add a one-line judgement per idea against the spec — that habit converts a "describe" answer into the "evaluate" the mark scheme rewards.
