Communication media matched to the message
A design idea reaches the client, design team and maker through a range of media, each matched to its message: sketches to explore and share early ideas; models to show form and let people handle it; diagrams to show how parts relate; formal drawings (orthographic, isometric, sectional) to specify exact size and construction; written notes to record decisions. Whatever the medium, the two demands are precision (exact, unambiguous) and clarity (easy to read).
Handling data -- extract, interpret, record
Communication starts with handling the data in three stages. Extract: pull the relevant facts from a source (brief, survey, measurements) and ignore the rest. Interpret: make sense of them -- the trend, the common answer, the range it must fit. Record: choose the fitting format -- a table for figures, a bar chart to compare categories, a pie chart for proportions of a whole, a line graph for change over time. Number skills (scale, dimensions, angles) run through all three.
Working drawing buildable by a third party
The top communication task is the final solution drawing, judged against one benchmark: enough for a skilled third party to make the product unaided. It needs more than a neat outline: construction details (how parts join, the fixings, assembly) and important dimensions (every size controlling fit and function). Both are specifically credited, and weaker work loses those marks. The rule scales down: notes must ADD information, so sketches alone cannot reach full marks.

Final drawing with no sizes or joins
A standing key message: the final drawing must let a third party make it, yet candidates draw a clean outline and never show how parts join, the fixings, or the key sizes. The construction-detail and dimension marks are the ones most often lost. Treat it as instructions: add joints, section or explode to reveal hidden construction, and dimension every size that matters.

Sketches without informative notes
Where a task asks for sketches AND notes, sketches alone cannot reach full marks -- marks are reserved for the notes, which must add information the drawing cannot show: the specific material, a key size, how a part works. The repeated error is omitting notes, or ones that label the obvious ('this is the handle') or restate the brief. Annotation is information, not decoration.

Bar chart used for proportions
Asked to record data as a pie chart -- the right choice for proportions of a whole -- a significant number of candidates draw a bar chart instead and score nothing. The distinction is the trap: a bar chart compares separate categories against a scale, while a pie chart divides one whole into slices showing each part's share of the total. Choose the format that fits the data.

Pie sector angles not totalling 360
Choosing a pie chart is only half the mark -- the angles must be right. Candidates often get one sector right but calculate the rest wrongly, so the slices do not total 360 degrees. Each slice angle is that category's share of the total in degrees; check they sum to 360. Getting the number work right secures the recording-data marks.

Generic material named in a note
Communication must be precise, so an annotation naming a generic material -- 'metal', 'wood', 'plastic' -- gains no credit. A note must name a specific material (mild steel, aluminium, acrylic, pine, MDF) so the maker knows what to use, with a property-linked reason. Consumables such as 'paint' are not accepted. Precise technical vocabulary is where these marks sit.

Misreading a key word in the brief
Communicating a design starts with interpreting the brief correctly. Candidates who misread a key term -- words like 'terrain' or 'dispensing' -- design and draw the wrong thing, so however well presented, it cannot gain the marks. Read carefully, underline the key words, and check your idea actually answers what was asked before committing it to a final drawing.

Neat and rendered is not buildable
A testable wrong belief: that a communication drawing is good if it looks attractive and neatly coloured. Rendering, shading and colour help a reader read the form and material, but they do not make a drawing buildable. A rendered outline with no dimensions and no construction detail cannot be made by a third party, so it caps the marks. Neat is not the same as sufficient.
Make the final drawing buildable
On the final solution drawing, work as if instructing a maker: show construction details (joints, fixings, assembly), sectioning or exploding where hidden, and dimension every size that controls fit and function. Both are specifically credited and are what weaker answers omit.
Annotate with new information
Make every note earn its mark by adding what the drawing cannot show -- the specific material, a key dimension, or how a part works -- never labelling the obvious or restating the brief. Where a task says sketches AND notes, budget time for them: marks are reserved for the notes.
Pick the chart that fits the data
Match the graphic to the message: a pie chart for proportions of a whole (angles summing to 360), a bar chart to compare categories, a line graph for change over time. Then do the number work accurately: format and figures are both credited.
