Constraints: knowledge, resources, info
A design task is bounded by constraints — limits the designer works within. Three matter here: your knowledge and skills (gaps to fill before designing well); the resources available — tools, machines, materials, time and budget (no injection moulding if the workshop has only a vacuum former); and the external sources to consult — existing products, standards and users. List what you must still find out; that is your research plan.
Primary vs secondary research
Research has two sources. Primary research is data you collect first-hand: interviewing or surveying users, measuring people or spaces, testing products yourself. Secondary research is information others already published: books, catalogues, websites, standards, manufacturers' data. Use both, then order it (by user needs, environment, materials, cost) and assess it — relevant, current, reliable? Every specification point should trace to a research finding.
Match the chart to the data
Present and interpret data, don't just list it. Match the tool: a bar chart compares categories; a pie chart shows proportions (sector = fraction times 360 degrees); a line graph shows change over time; a flow chart shows a sequence. Interpreting means a conclusion: the most common answer, a trend, or a test result compared with the specification for pass/fail. Marks come from the conclusion, not the chart.

Repeating the brief scores zero
A repeated Paper 1 fault is writing a point the brief already gave. If the brief says the product must hold three coins, writing "it must hold coins" again scores zero. A spec point must be additional and specific. Turn a finding into something measurable — from "most users are children" write "no sharp edges, light enough for a child to lift".

Quantity of research isn't relevance
A bigger pile of research does not score higher. Pages of generic material with little to do with the actual problem earn little. Examiners reward research relevant to the brief: gather user data (interviews, surveys) plus ergonomic and environmental detail, order and assess it, and end with a written specification. Judge research by relevance, not page count.

Bar chart when a pie chart is asked
Presenting data with the wrong tool loses all the marks. Asked for a pie chart, many drew a bar chart and scored nothing. Keep them apart: a pie chart shows proportions of a whole (each sector = its fraction times 360 degrees); a bar chart compares separate categories. If 15 of 60 chose an option, that sector is 15/60 x 360 = 90 degrees, and sectors sum to 360.

Primary research isn't looking things up
Primary research is not searching the internet or reading books — that is secondary research, information someone else already published. Primary research is data you collect first-hand: surveying users, measuring people or spaces, testing products. The test: did YOU collect it for this project (primary), or find it already published (secondary)?
Quantitative vs qualitative data
Quantitative vs qualitative data are easily muddled. Quantitative data is numbers — how many, how big — and charts easily. Qualitative data is opinions — what users like or dislike and why. Charting data needs quantitative; explaining why users prefer something needs qualitative. Collecting the wrong type loses marks.
A chart with no conclusion
Drawing the chart is only half the task. Interpreting data means stating what it tells you — the most common answer, a trend, or a test result compared with the specification for pass/fail. A chart with no conclusion scores little because it does not inform the design. Finish with the conclusion, plus the improvement if a test failed.
Generic words like "nice" or "cheap"
Words that fit almost any product gain no marks. "Nice", "cheap" or "easy to use" are not testable — they could describe a chair, a phone or a bird feeder alike — so examiners credit none. Make each point measurable instead: for "easy to use" write "operated with one hand"; for "cheap" write "materials under 5 dollars". Make it specific enough to test.

Turn each finding into a specific spec point
Convert each finding into a point that is additional, specific and testable. Turn "users over 65" into "large easy-grip controls", "used at the beach" into "corrosion-resistant enclosure". Never repeat the brief or write a generic point that fits any product.
Pick the chart the command asks for
Read the command for the exact chart: "pie chart" wants proportions, "bar chart" compares categories. Work each pie sector as its fraction times 360 degrees; check they sum to 360. Show working — intermediate marks stand even if the answer slips.
State the conclusion, not just the chart
After presenting data, write what it means: the most popular option, the trend, or whether a test result passed the specification. If it failed, state the change it suggests. Marks are reserved for interpretation, so stopping at a finished chart leaves marks unclaimed.
